Title: Clan of Vintners : Duty Log
Post by: Arlon on March 22, 2007, 10:40:54 AM
This past few days I have been cleaning out the old Vintner's Clan wagon, preparing it to be used once more. I have no idea how many years it has lain vacant (I am guessing several, since there is no old thread for the Clan), but I am slowly putting it to rights.
Because there is currently also no Clan of Brewers and Distillers, this Clan will be assuming those duties as well. Requests for both Clans will be taken, and will be filled as I and ariella are able to do so. Hopefully we shall be very busy soon! ;D

Long day/night yesterday, much work got done. Finished cleaning out the wagon with help from Amber, and Nic repaired some rents in the roof of the wagon. Serinna has accepted the commission to repaint the walls and roof inside and outside.
Went through most of the existing bottled stock as well; a lot of it was lost to being in the bottles too long, already gone to vinegar. Three bottles of Ka-La-Na wine were saved, and there appears to still be some more stock in the rear of the wagon to go through. The bottles of soured wines and juices, including one bottle of larma juice I had thought I could save, have been placed in the basin for ariella to empty out and clean for re-use.
If all goes well, the Clan should be open for business by Monday at least. (RT interfering on that one: could probably have had it by tomorrow, but I have a heavy work schedule due to the NASCAR event at Bristol over the weekend, and will not be on much Sat/Sun.) Requests are more than welcome and will be filled as soon as may be ;D

After being somewhat delayed due to a stampede that seriously damaged My personal wagon and necessitated ari and Myself sleeping in the Clan wagon for awhile, the first batch of ka-la-na has been pressed and is settling. Tonight I will begin racking the juice, which process will take a few days. If anyone wants some ka-la-na juice before I start racking out the sediments and such, this is a good time to let me know ;)
Also am setting up implements for a round of brewing, will try a nice mead for the first batch. Am having ari clean out the old still I found off in a dusty corner, so perhaps we might also eventually have paga and other spirits available. Give Me a bit of time and we'll have one rollicking lil Clan goin here. ;D

The first batch of Ka-La-Na is in the bottles and aging now, about another week or so and it should be ready. Looking for more fresh fruits even now to start a new batch of...something...lol. Might have to make a supply run soon.

Got the batch of honey mead going for Taryn last night ... looks like it's gonna make rather more than She ordered, so there may even be some left for general consumption. Should be ready in about 2 weeks, since it has to age and all before it's drinkable. Thinking of starting a new thread for Clan knowledge, to keep all My recipes and such so that I and any future Vintners will have them. (I mean hey, eventually there might actually be new members in the Clan, wouldn't that be cool...)

Taryn's honey mead is goin into the bottles today, so then all it needs is to age a bit and voila! ready to go hehe. Bout 10 days or such and it will be ready for pickup. Woot!

Migration prep is officially underway. The paga still was dismantled and packed away last night, since due to the extremely hot weather there will be no more paga produced this season. I had hoped to get a batch of sul paga done, a small one to be sent to the med wagon for disinfectant lol, but could never get My hands on enough suls in time.
Wine will continue to be available until the Askari come to make Me lock it up, but should be carefully controlled as to how much is consumed. It's not really high in alcohol but there IS alcohol in it, and alcohol dehydrates body tissues. The only reason it's still available is cause it also has vitamins and such in it, and is actually healthy when taken in smaller doses.
The big wine vats will be stored tonight, so even wine production is being halted but there is enough in stock to last for some time. Mead will be available till right before Migration.

Not much more prep to do for Migration, will be helping others with theirs as I can. The axles are greased on the Clan wagon, traces on both wagons have been checked and where necessary replaced, everything that needs to be packed away has been ... will have ari refill the oil in the lamps and the red lanterns and that should be about it.
Taryn's honey mead is ready and is being delivered tonight, and the excess (since I made a HUGE batch lol) is available for general use.

MIgration is underway officially as of last night. All alcoholic wares are still locked away to deter dehydration issues, both wagons secured and in motion. On another note, I have finally secured another personal wagon so that ariella and I are no longer residing in the Vintner's wagon. Hopefully this wagon can manage not to get busted up by stampeding bosk.
Am hoping to resume production soon after reaching the summer Camp, and will post here when the restrictions are lifted and fresh spirits are sent to the Commissary wagon.

Okay, we are Home once more! ;D Unpacking begins tonight, and once I have assessed the available supplies of fruits and grains for making alcohol, the Vintner's wagon will once again light the braziers and start cooking up new batches of wine and other such tasty beverages;)
Present supplies will be released for use as soon as these ASKARI get outof my bloody way so I can unlock the freight wagon ..... :P

Unpacking is finally done, ariella will be busy cleaning on the new wagon for awhile, and the first pressings of the new fruits will begin as soon as I can get into Camp to start them. (RT really gets in the way sometimes....) Thanks again Sissy for the crates of fresh fruits, I will see they are put to very good use ;)

Sheesh, amazing how far behind one can get when r/t gets crazy ... OK, the new fruits are being put to use. There is a fresh batch of Ka-La-Na wine aging even now (had to NPC that, which I hate, but the fruits won't keep forever even for r/t), and a batch of grape wine settling. Paga production is proceeding normally even with the new paga wagon running, especially since much of it goes right to the paga wagon. Some of the other fruits have been pressed for juice, which will be sent to the Commissary and Med wagons, and I am even contemplating taking a stab at annisette since the last Brewer kindly left the recipe for it. At this rate I'm gonna have to make a trip for more fruit before much longer, especially since mulled wines are going to be needed soon for the winter months. And I am definitely gonna need brewer's yeast and fixer. Suppplies are good right now, but I will need to lay some up for winter soon.
It also occurs to me that, as busy as ariella and I have been with pressing and bottling lately, another kajira or two might be of use. (Probably NPC's, though any Camp kajirae needing chores to do are welcome to help out as well here and there.) I may even consider looking for a suitable apprentice (to keep the wagon going when r/t keeps me out of Camp, as seems likely to be often with a baby on the way now). I shall post a notice soon regarding both issues, since the Clan needs to grow now.

The grape wine has been bottled and is aging, and I started a new batch of honey mead this night. I decided to try adding a bit of ramberry for flavoring (and to use up some ramberries I had extra lol), and jsut a hint of chamomile. I think it will work out well. The wort has been cooked and is cooling overnight, I will pitch the yeast tomorrow and let the wort work for a few days, then it should be ready to bottle and age.

The new batch of mead is ready for the bottles, and I will try to get to that tonight. The finished product looks very good: as with last time, the tospit did an excellent job of clarifying the wort. The ramberry and chamomile appear to have worked in well also; I cannot see evidence of separating or detect individual bits of chamomile herb left over after the straining. The mead will go in the bottles tonight, then be aged for 10-14 days before serving. As always, Taryn gets the first bottles since She loves honey mead so much.

Once again, RT keeps Me too busy to keep My logs...:( Production has continued as best it might, and goodly amounts of spirits have been stocked in the freight wagon, with a great deal of help from dakota, Tira's thrall, who has been very good about toting crates to the freight wagon so I could keep producing. Winter Migration is imminent, and preparations for that have necessitated the stowage of most of the heavy equipment, including once again the large wine vats and the still. With ariella mostly unavailable due to r/t, most of the work is either being done by Myself or by NPC thralls/camp kajirae.
The first of the bulk orders were processed and delivered over the last couple days: 2 cases of good red wine to Faramir, with a couple bottles of good paga thrown in; and 1 case of Sul paga to Nexhias, intended for use as a topical disinfectant, along with a bottle of kalana wine for actual drinking. Both deliveries made late last night by thrall courier.
I have also received a list from Shoko of things Her Brother would like to have delivered; that list will be filled in the next day or so, hopefully before BERAT decides it's time to move. I am beginning one last batch of honey mead, a large one, that I hope will be stable enough to travel before we Migrate. This to replace the copious amounts of mead requested in the latest order.
Remaining finished product in the freight wagon is estimated at eight to twelve cases of red wine, two to three of ka-la-na, six of honey mead (after the large order is filled, hence the large replacement batch), and approximately eighteen cases of paga in oversized bottles. One case of slave wine is also kept near the back of the wagon, and two large demijohns of fermented peaches are ready to be shipped.
Finished product in the Clan wagon: four red, two white, one ka-la-na, two honey mead. Also one batch each of white and mead in aging racks, and the season's last batch of ka-la-na working.
It is My plan, while in Turia this Migration, to acquire more yeast and fixer, fresh fruits in bulk for pressing, and a barrel or two of tospits for clarifier. New tubing for the still would also be a plus, and I would like to find some barrels for bulk wine storage if possible. It is not impossible that I may need to find a second freight wagon as well, to use strictly for bulk storage of barrels, bottles, fruits, etc. so the current freight wagon can be better organized for storing finished product (and the large wine vats when needed).

After an eventful few nights, the following: the interior of the Vintner's Wagon has been effectively destroyed by a spooked riding tharlarion. There is also significant structural damage from said tharlarion tearing its way throughthe opening, enlarging it considerably and very nearly collapsing the entire tent-domeupon itself inthe process. Supplies are at an all-time low; such few as are left are being moved to the Vintner's freight wagon for safekeeping. Yeast inparticualr is criticallyl low, and will virtually stop production until replenished.
For the moment, the Vintner's wagon is toast; the repair process will be lengthy and Migratrion is not far away now. Since the wagon carriage appears to be sound yet, the wagoncan be brought along as-is, and repaired when time permits.

ARLON!

I seen that your wagon needed some reparing, so I had a group of thralls come over and fix up the doorway and I cleaned out the wagon too!

Everything that was salvageable was cleaned off and put up on the remaining set of shelves... the whole wagon was cleaned and swept, all the debris cleared out and even a picture or two hung on the wall.

In payment to myself I took a bottle of white wine from the storage and plan on having a glass with my dinner!

I need no other repayment!

I am slightly (Waaaaaaaaaaaay Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Far) behind in updating this. -lol-

The Clan wagon was once more straightened and fixed, made ready for use. Bottles have been cleaned and sterilized and put up for use when it comes time once more. Supplies were restocked and well, things are ready.

Yesterday I got some of the fruits pressed and racking and two small vats set aside in case anyone wishes fresh juice. Today I plan on starting a honey mead batch as well.

Post by: Mercilayne on April 13, 2010, 08:37:46 PM
Okay migration is over as is the restocking at the Point. So for now, things are getting back to normal. Grape wine has been made, racked, and bottled. There is some being stored as well as some in the process of being readied for bottling. A bottle from each batch when it is bottled has been left out for Arlon to sample to ensure that all is well with the pressing. Also a batch of mead has been started and being allowed to settle. There should be around 12 more days before it's ready to drink.

Stock is, for now, in good supply and all is normal. The clan is keeping busy with ensuring the the Camp has what it needs as well as stock for bartering if necessary later on.

I have yet to get up with Tayrn since migration to see what it is she wished to talk to me about in regards to the Clan. Our schedules haven't been nice to us just yet to give us time to talk. Hopefully I'll get to see her soon on this.

I spoke with Amber last evening and she said that the Healer's clan does not need any sul-paga just now, but some fermented peach pulp supply is needed for whenever the Clan can get around to starting it. I should be able to get started on this in the next few days baring anything else happening. She was also warned that I've never done this, so it might take longer than normal as I'm sure I'll not get the first batch or two right.

I think that's it for now in the log, know it's been a long time since I've posted on it and am, once again, waaaaay behind. So hoping that things settle back into a normal routine now and I'll be able to keep up on things more.

Finally caught up with Taryn, in between reminding everyone it was physical time and planning for migration, she said she had something that she thought the Vintner's Clan could use. It was an variety blend oil that could be used to take the bitter taste away from some drinks. I told her I would get up with her soon both for the physical and for the oil so the clan could try it.

So far the supplies are still in good shape. An inventory is in the process of being started since it will not be long til migration.

The fermented peach has been delivered to the healer's wagon, both Taryn and Amber were made aware of it last evening. There were 4 cases delivered and if more is needed, all a healer has to do is send word and a new batch will be started.

We resupplied at Turia on the way to our current camp site for this summer. The supplies are in good order and we have plenty. It was definately needed as a lot of the supplies were at a low. Everything should be up to par supply wise and what fixes were needed for the vats and barrels were gotten and have been placed since we stopped. Everything was unpacked and set up so we can being our work.

The Clan has already started one batch of ta grape wine and it is currently aging before we will bottle it. It shouldn't be too long before it is ready to transfer ino the bottles if needed. A batch of honey mead is completed as well and lacks a hand in being ready to be put out for general consumption.

Tonight another batch of the ta grape wine was pressed and settled into the first of the four rackings that we will finish over the next 4 days before the yeasts and then later, the fixers added to it. An ale was also started tonight and should finished in around 3 hands once it was aged to be drinkable.

Some fruit has also been pressed and the juices bottled along with a second pressing of the fruits which would result in a slightly weaker juice but still tasty. We are attempting to restock on this as well as the juices practically ran out during migration. This is being done mostly by the apprentices just now with supervision.

I hope to start a batch of ka la na wine in the next few days.

If anyone has anything that they would particularlly like to see made or something specific, let me know and we'll see what we can't do.
Title: Re: Clan of Vintners : Duty Log

Fresh batches of ka la na as well as honey mead and ale are ready for the camp. Various bottles of fruit juices have been pressed as well and made ready, as well as the second pressing of them too, which are slightly more watery than the orginals, but just as good and will do just as well to rid one of thirst.

I've been considering making a batch of the Anisette that is in the Clan knowledge to see if it would go over well in trading the next time we are in Turia. I'll probably start on that in the next day or so.

We have also made a small batch of Peach Wine. There isn't much of it, around 30 bottles total. They will be ready at the end of the hand. As promised, first bottles are to be delivered to Sarant. If it is sucessful, I'll consider another batch soon. Maybe for trade as well.

Why is it that I'm always so behind in these logs? One of life's mysteries I guess.

Winter Migration is over with now and we are at the new camp site, the clan wagons are being unpacked and set up for use once more. As soon as we get to resupply at the Point, the wine vats will be put to use, they are currently unpacked and being set up. Paga will have to be made as well as soon as some Sa Tarna is acquired as well. Of course fruits for juices will be needed as well.

We did manage to get a batch of honey mead started and it's now on its first day. In about 2 weeks it should be ready for consumption.

The clan is currently in the process of sorting and reorganizing. The wines, meads, ales, various drinks, and juices that are the oldest and in the back of the wagon are being pulled to the front and piled up to be taken to the commissary wagon. It's a various mix of things that have been pushed to the back and overlooked. It frees up a lot of room as well for what will be made and stored soon.

The palm wine that was bought in Turia had somehow been put into the freight wagons of the clan instead of the camp wagons, it's in the process of being transfered out as well. Although we're keeping 10 cases of it back in the Vintner's freight wagons just so that the camp wagons won't be overwhelmed.

If anyone has any requests for anything, either juices, wines, liquors, etc... Let me know and we'll see what can't be done.

It seems to be nearing Migration time once more, how long is still anyone's guess. Acutally a lot has been accomplished during the recent months since we managed to set up and get started once more. Production has been steady, gone fairly smoothly with minimal losses. Some bottles and crates as well as a few casks will have to be replaced soon seeing as how some were broken in various times lately.

Once more, I have been experimenting with the wines. The peach wine seems to be a pretty good success and a few more batches of it have gone out. This last batch, one case (20 bottles) went to the Hunter's clan wagon for Sarant. I might to try to add some other herbs and flavors in the next batch, that will depend on when it is and what my mind is occupied with if I recall to try it or if it gets put off again.

I've also tried to make some larma wine as well. It is a small batch, just to see if it's well received and any good. Since Salem's the one who suggested it, one crate (20 bottles) of it is being sent to his wagon so he can be a taste tester. One crate is also being sent to the Ubar's wagon for him to try out as well. I don't expect to hear from either for a couple hands as I know how busy that they both are. The wines will do wel in sitting though, so it will not hurt them.

I also sent 20 bottles of honey mead to Taryn's wagon. I know that she didn't request them, but as much as Taryn's been working lately, when she gets a chance for a break, she deserves it.

My idea on the next hand or so, is to start to thin some of the fruit juices out. put them into casks, mix most around 1/3 juice and 2/3 water for the upcoming Migration. Keep everyone hydrated as needed with a little flavor as well. I plan on asking Taryn when I see her next if she wants to keep the casks in her wagon where she often serves people from, or if they should stay in the clan wagon for now.

The water barrels and what empty casks that we have as of now, will also be used to fill and store water soon enough.

Migration is over with and the Clan is once more set up and operational. The Camp has been restocked from the wagons.. What little was needed. During the Migration itself, not a lot was lost. Some yes, but we expect some losses.

A quick resupply in Turia has us back up to what we should be on supplies for the Clan.

We have recently come into possession of quite a bit of fruits that will go bad quickly. So the Clan is pressing them as quickly as we can and a call was put out to the Camp to eat fruits if they wished before they went bad.

Wow, is this log overdue for updating... Winter Migration is done, everything secured in its place and operating. I started a fresh batch of honey mead last night -- a test batch before filling the three-cask order already on the books. Some will of course go to Dragonslair as always, some will go to the Commissary Wagon for the Home in general, and Izee has offered trade for some as well -- some of her reportedly excellent stew, which I will be delighted to try.
The supply run to The Point is imminent, so I've been busy today greasing axles and checking harness. I don't want anything untoward happening on the trip. I'm hoping I've enough coin from my recent travels to buy enough fruit, grain and especially yeast to keep things running at capacity for the Home. Supply levels are about as one would expect right after Migration -- namely, pretty darn low -- but I aim to solve that issue at The Point.

Okay, so thus far at The Point, I may have gone... a touch overboard...? I have procured for the Clan the following:

1000 flats of Ta grapes
1000 crates Ka-La-Na fruit
1000 crates Larma fruit
5.5 Gorean weight of yeast

It is likely that much of this will get sent to the Commissary wagon eventually, as I have my doubts about the Clan using so much fruit no matter how hard we run the fermenters, but Tuchuk will not run out of spirits before Summer Migration. Also, Merci has returned to us and will have her still up and running to produce paga for Tuchuk.. and for DRAGONSLAIR and the Med wagon, since that was the trade for the captured Kassar wagons I had to trade with the bulk-goods merchant to carry the larma and kalana (and, frankly, probably part of the grapes as well).

Since the merchants are in good spirits this trip, I may check with the Vintner's Supply Lodge and see about acquiring another fermenter and perhaps a second press as well. So far I've spent all of 42 of the clan's gold, so I don't think we're hurting overmuch yet. Especially since with so much stock to bottle, I'm hoping to maybe put some of these next runs back to trade in a year or two, after they've aged.

Last point, but by far the least -- WELCOME HOME MERCILAYNE!!!!

Tuchuk will not be partying on a dry palate! *W*

On another note, the test batch of honey mead I had started before the trip to The Point had been safely removed from the fermenter and bottled by the time we returned, thanks to the efforts of the Clan in general. 53 of the small mead bottles made 6 cases of 8 bottles each, with 5 bottles left over. Honestly not a very bad yield, I'd say, but it will be the last batch bottled into those small bottles. After this point the mead will go into wine bottles like everything else we ferment, to simplify logistics for the Clan at resupply time.

On Buddha's wagon porch, delivered two nights past by thralls and a cart: One keg fresh-brewed paga with complimentary carrying skin for convenience. Enjoy!
