Illnesses on Gor
« on: September 26, 2005, 03:37:44 AM »
Everything I have read or been told about Gor indicates we wouldn't have such things as viruses or colds...but yet we see a lot of them in r/p......

Beyond physical damage to the body, are there common illnesses on Gor?

Physicians rarely encounter other problems that are common to Earth.  Heart attacks and cholesterol problems would be very rare.  Frequent exercise and low fat diets would help prevent this.  Without the massive technology and pollutants of Earth, most forms of cancer would also be rare.  Psychiatrists and psychologists may not exist on Gor as most people seem quite content with their lot in life.  Physician's are sometimes asked certain pyschological questions though it would not be the norm.  For example, free women sometimes ask what they can do about being frigid.  The standard advice given is often to learn slave dance.  Goreans freely accept the Caste system and the institution of slavery.  Most Goreans are happy and very well adjusted.  Overall, Goreans lead healthier lives than Earth people.

Dental work on Gor is rarely done or needed.  Due to its rarity, dentistry is probably not a subcaste.   There would be insufficient work to support such a specialist.  Cavities are rare because of the simple diet of Goreans and their absence of emotional stress, guilt, and worry. The mouths of slave girls are often checked by a buyer or slaver to see if she has fillings or not. That is normally a sign that the girl is from Earth due to the rarity of dental work on Gor.

May love and laughter light your days..And warm your heart and home..May good and faithful friends be yours..Wherever you may roam..May peace and joy bless your world.. And may all life's passing seasons..Bring the best to you and yours..

ok, this one i am not so sure about, the diets of Goreans after having lived in many places, and have learned the list of foods available,  those of the plains their basic diets would consist of bosk and such,  bosk to my knowledge is a red meat, very high on cholesteral, vulo eggs, eggs are full of cholesteral, tarsk being a sort of swine, would be full of fat. now the only thing that i could see conteracting these would be their amount of exercise, and the advanced level of Gorean medicine, as with the cold, i really cant see how a virus that mutates as being able to have been abolished, as well as HepC,  which i would think would be almost rampant with the amount of blood transfusions ive witnessed, and with the Plains peoplen ot living in the cleanest of conditions, well you see my point there. we arent filthy but, our environment isnt sterile either.
now, for canker and cold sores,  those could happen from mouth injury and we do suffer from that alot -chuckles- cold sores often happen from when the lips crack from the cold,  easy to prevent and take care of, but would happen, tho usually brought on by herpies,  but not always,
pnumonia is not always viral, it is bacterial in some instances, something that cant be avoided, because we cant live without bacteria, we actually use a bit of that when we cook and eat, it is also used as a medicine common to Gor, the antibiotic, but getting a chill or a constant chill when damp or wet could bring it on, or even from bathing in either to cold of water in the winter, or from breathing in the steam of  hot  water when out in the cold, as in deep winter temps,

just because the medical technology of Gor is so advanced doesnt mean that these things have been eradicated, but that they have become managable and the time suffered lessened significantly, the reason they  would rarely be heard of is also because of this, they would be minor things, taken care of before they could become wide spread, atleast thats my view on it.
but i agree with the comments on cancer, that would be something that with technology would of and could have been abolished, it isnt so much a disease, as it is a condition, it is something that can be avoided in most cases, but even with this there is question, what of skin cancer, we spend 90 percent of our days outside, in the sun, to my knowledge, there wasnt a sunscreen on Gor, or am i wrong?

my opinions on this could go on and on but i really dont feel like typing any more right now, but i think what i feel about illnesses has benn put down pretty well,

just wanted to add too, that the wagons people, the only ones on Gor did have a sort of psycologist, it was the haruspex,  they were who the FW went to to speak to on different things, just wanted to add this, so they did have problems, just not like on earth

also

(( speaking about the health of soldiers of Ar in the Vosk Delta)) "Sickness and infection, too were rampant, hunger and exposure, sunstroke and dysentery were common." (Vagabonds of Gor pg. 149)

Considering that Mr JN is clueless when it comes to physics ............. his whole theory on the gravitational aspect ..........

JN actually explains that the whole health issues stem not from genetics or dietary issues, but from the gravity ......... mixed in with the followers of Pythagoras who ate (and behaved, among other things), like the Initiates (hmmm) ..... and we can't forget the stabilization serums ....

The world, the atmosphere, the animals, people's bodies, are all filled with numerous bacteria .... perhaps Mr JN didn't mention things like the common cold, etc, is because... it's ... common.

All this and more I have researched and transitioning to my webpages which --------- will be back online possibly as early as next weekend.

*tapping my chin as I read this*

Most all the meant comsum ed, red meat or other wise comes from beasts more or less similar to to the bison of urth or wild deer both of these sources of protein are not high cholesterol the native peoples of earth did not have such a high risk of heart and circulatory problems until the bison were killed off and beef cattel were brought in and fed until they were almost hide bound they were so fat it also would stand to reason in this woman's head that wild hogs would be the same way not so fat. meat doesn't kill fat does.

As for the common cold as someone said its common *sniffles*

I do know that the PKs erradicated most ailment-causing bacterium... Strep throat, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, measles, mumps, rubella, most digestive ailments -- they just wouldn't happen on Gor.  AIDs wouldn't exist, and I have to say that STDs don't either -- or else there'd be lots Paga tavern-hopping men with syphillis.  We know that cells regenerate with absolute perfection due to the aging serums, so I have to say that cancer isn't a possibility, either.

We do know that Goreans have lice which can roam on both the heads of humans and in the feathers of tarns... the latter version of lice being MARBLE-sized... *shuddering* That's not a disease, per say, but it is a medical problem of sorts.

We do know that slaves have gotten dysentary (diahreah) from dirty living conditions in slave pens... Brak usually assists with such things...

I'm sure migraine headaches would be possible...

I can dig up the quotes if you guys wish!

this girl learned about the serums a couple nights ago, and happened on the discussions of serums while reading  'Captive of Gor' this afternoon.  elinor britten was given a series of four, very painful injections into the small of her back after being brought to Gor from earth.  i have learned that the injections eliminate allergies, and other common illnesses.  this girl received hers while still on the silver disk, and will r/p accordingly.
