I spent the afternoon in the hospital as they operated on Domenic Cirillo. I knew it was that damn Dante Zasa I had seen shooting directly at me from the rear window in the Mercedes. At least he was now dead and out of the way.
I had reached Madison Cirillo on my cell phone right after the attack, telling her that her father had been shot and seriously wounded. I wasn't sure if he'd survive. He had informed me just before we were leaving the Four, that he had just told Maddie everything about her past, her now living mother, Justine Delancy, and her twin sister, Sophie Delancy.
While I waited, Lt. Joe Friday arrived and I gave him my Glock, the licensed weapon I'd use to defend us in the attack. He said it would be returned after they finished wrapping up this case. I told him Cirillo was still under the knife. He asked me if I had any idea what causes the attack. I said I really couldn't say, but he stared at me knowing I wasn't wearing a vest unless I knew there might be trouble. He shrugged and left, knowing the ME would eventually identify the three bodies that found in the burned up Mercedes.
I was sitting there in the waiting room thinking when the surgeon walked in. He said the surgery was complete and Cirillo was now in the recovery room. He wasn't hopeful that Cirillo would be able to recover from the nasty wounds. One lung had collapsed and there was a lot of internal bleeding. They're giving him transfusions, but he was awfully weak.
I called Maddie and left her a message and directions to the hospital. I told her he wasn't awake yet or able to see visitors and that I planned to stay there and wait until she arrived.
Then I called Ben, telling him what had happened and asking him to try and locate Sophie and advise her of her father's condition.
