Title: The Point Venture
Post by: RAGNAR on October 01, 2013, 10:05:16 PM

The inner circle had left Tuchuk at a comfortable easy pace. The trip to The Point was uneventful and enjoyable, includig an overly long layover as the fine Women of Tuchuk prepared a good fitfull meal from what upplies were brought along. It was a a lay layover, of which I have no complaint after the stress of events prior to this venture.

Tuchuk reached The Point and gained entry, and have taken up residence in wagon lot B. Announcement made:

When the wagons have come to a halt in their positions, RAGNAR steps up onto his saddle as his mount remains steady. It is good vantage point to address his family. “ATTENTION TUCHUK!!! As usual, the bosk will be released from their yokes and harnesses to graze the area between the wagons and the palisade wall. Kaiila may be chained to wagon platforms, or stabled. None may be allowed to roam within the palisade. As my gift to my family, with the cooperation of RAYAH, all may visit the baths and enjoy. This does NOT include taking your mount into the bath as well, RAZIEL!!! The baths are NOT to be used as a community latrine, especially when only non-Tuchuk people occupy the baths… RAZIEL!!! Free may sleep with the wagons or they may seek a room here free of charge. Slaves may remain with the wagons or join the free in a room if the free allows. The Women may visit Rayah’s Place for some personal pampering. The cost has been covered. I shall host my family, free and slave, to a private evening meal, the day and time to be announced later. I am also gifting each slave ten copper to do with as they wish. Slaves that are privately owned included. I ask their Masters and Mistresses to permit this gift. Each free is gifted two silver to do with as they wish. Enjoy these things as my gift to those of the first wagon. Any Clan requiring additional funding may seek such at fair terms from any Council member. This is also true for any individuals that may be in need of funds. Enjoy my Family!!!”

Tuchuk remains in lot B.

The Point is loaded with goods from regularly arriving caravans from all points. Good deals seem to be abundant if one is willing to haggle.

No negative incidents to report thus far... all is well.

Delivered;

"The merchant and Ragnar finally agree on a price. The merchant naturally hoped for more, but he knew he had to move his inventory before the next load came in, and that should be any day now. Instead of 350 copper a case of 500 shafts, they agreed upon three silver if purchased in bulk. Ragnar had hoped for better, but under the circumstances he was pleased. 150 cases would be delivered to the wagons at first light. As they had done business in the past, and would likely do so in the future, the merchant was paid a round figure of 23 DWG for product, delivery, and loading under the supervision of Raziel."

150 cases of arrow shafts, 500 count, delivered and loaded............... 23 DWG

-=-Report by Tomar-=-

Taryn is currently under arrest for allegedly stealing from a merchant. Madison and RAGNAR will be told of the charges that she has against her, though she claims that she paid for the supplies, but the guards are also talking about charging her for fighting back as they were taking her to await the decision of Madison.

Taryn is in the captive pit, the last that I saw of my mother, she was pacing in the pit and she wasn't hurt, but she wasn't in the best of moods.

I am sitting in the lounge at the Inn, writing in my Journal so I can deliver an accurate report to Donar when I return to Scagnar.  My two tots are having breakfast beside me, and are eating scrambled vulo eggs mixed with cheese and chopped scallions, toasted sa-tarna bread, sliced larmas, and drinking from mugs of ramberry juice.

I write;

"Our travel to the Point was without major incidents, although we did acquire two extra wagons, eight bosk, three kaiila, and some new slaves. Ivar the Boneless was slightly injured, and Sven the Red sustained a fractured right arm.  I dressed the wounds, and we continued.  When we arrived at the Point, I used an old Letter of Credit that Drax had given to me when we had been living in the Schendi...it was accepted...and I booked the entire top floor of the best Inn.  We all had a nice meal, and the next day I went about selling our trade goods.  Prices were very good, and our coin trunk was soon filled with silvers and a number of golds, and uncountable coppers.  The whale oil obtained an especially good price, as did our seasleen hides.  The dried and salted fish was sold to a Tuchuk Merchant for a good price...and he threw in a matched set of eight quivas to close the deal.  I will give Jonas the quivas, he does like to collect weapons.

Did I say that there were Tuchuk there?

When we arrived, we smelled bosk, and saw a lot of wagons parked with military precision, and I correctly identified them as Tuchuk, having briefly stayed with them when our Panther Band had passed through their area.  I had looked over the Jarls when we were dining that first evening, and had said, "Please don't fight with the Tuchuk, that could disrupt our journey, and they are very fierce."  Ivar had roared with laughter, and had said, "Don't worry, Medi, there will be no fighting", and had called to sarai to fill his mug with more paga.

During the next three days, when I came down from my room in the morning, I was handed bills for 'damages' from various establishments, and would address moderate injuries among the Jarls.  At least they weren't drawing weapons, so most of the injuries were large bruises, concussions, and greenstick fractures.  I had been walking by a Tavern one evening, and Ivar was tossed out through the window, landing hard just in front of me.  I had stood over him and watched as he got up, "I thought I said that there should be no fighting with the Tuchuk."  Ivar had grinned down at me, and patted me on the head, "Not to worry, Lady Izee', that was not a 'fight'."  He had gone back in, and had shouted, "Next round is on me!"  I had heard Tuchuk voices roar with approval...and the Tavern Keeper had come out to me, and had handed me a bill.  "I will send a complete accounting on the morrow, Lady."

I had budgeted payment for 'damages' when planning this expedition, I may have underestimated this item of cost, but the unexpected bonus of capturing two wagons and accoutrements may more than make up for the increased costs."

End Report

I head towards the FW baths, leaving the tots with walela...I really need a hot bath and some pampering right now...

I am sitting at the breakfast table, looking around at the Jarls who are demolishing bowls of scrambled vulo eggs, kippered fish, loaves of sa-tarna bread, shredded tarsk belly, and a few horns of mead.  Ivar is looking rather peaked...his left ear bandaged where I had sewn it back on...and one eye still swollen shut.  I glare at him, and he grins back.  "Ok, OK, Lady Izee', I agree, that was a fight."  I look at him, and then at all of the Jarls, and say to them..."Ye be along to protect me, and see that we get our purchases back to the Isle, how you expect to do that when ye be drinking like Southern silk slaves?"  They grumble at me, but continue eating...I notice a few wave away sarai when she approaches them with a pitcher of mead.

I sip on my mug of larma juice, and chew on a piece of shredded tarsk belly.  "There be a celebration this night, and it be a very important one.  The Tuchuk Ubar is going to declare that he has selected a Tuchuk woman to court.  We be invited, but any fighting will probably result in weapons being drawn...and we be very heavily outnumbered here...at least 100 to 1...not even Thor could prevail against such odds."  I hear a Jarl mutter, "If the Ubar wants the woman as a FC, why doesn't he just 'claim her' and take her to his wagon?"  I look over at the Jarl, and frown..."The customs be different here, and we will respect them."

Ivar has been listening, and rouses himself a bit...technically he is in charge of this expedition.  He looks around at the other Jarls, and says.  "Ye heard Medi, she be giving good advice, as she has sworn to do so.  No 'discussions' with the Tuchuk during their celebration; share in their food, and drink their spirits, and give honor to the Ubar and his intended woman this evening, and call for the Gods to bless their Companionship."  Ivar sits back down, heavily, and chews on a slice of bread piled with scrambled vulo eggs.  He looks over at me and winks his good eye.  I nod at him with appreciation, and eat more of my breakfast.  I then hear walela calling out to me, and I rise, and go to where she is standing with my children.  "They are asking for tastas, Kashna, those ones that are being sold at the far end of the food court."  I smile at her, and pick up Katniss and lead the way as she follows holding Stefan's hand.  We will spend the day enjoying the Point, purchasing a few items, and getting ready for the trip home.  And, of course, waiting for the Tuchuk Feast to begin.

((Rags, I am sorry, I have my first rehearsal for next Saturdays Concert tonite...I would have skipped it...but I will have to miss tomorrows rehearsal because of a business trip...I can't miss two rehearsals.  I will be thinking of you and Nightstorm while we wade through the string rehearsal...*S*))

Following the feast, I walked NightStorm to the Inn and secured the suite for her use for as long as she desires. An Or of Askari were posted to stand guard throughout the night. I then proceeded to the wagons and spent the night in the treasury wagon registering and logging the receipts for camp goods that have been paid for and delivered the past several days;

**********************************************

150 cases of 500 arrow shafts, 3 Silver per………. 23 DWG rounded figure

10 two gorean weight barrels salted parsit…………..1 Gold

10 cases of glass slave beads, one gw ea.... 2 copper ea ………. 20 copper

10 bolts silk assort colors... 5 copper ea……….. 50 copper

Ten boxes 100 count slave bells.... 10 copper ea……….. 1 Silver Tarn

Twenty bolts koora red cloth... 5 copper ea……….. 1 Silver

Cassius sprung for ten cases of assorted perfumes at 50 copper per case………. 5 Silver.

*************************************

100 axle wheel nuts at 20 copper each………..1 DWG
200 Gorean weight of nails……………………4 Silver
40 iron hitch pins at 10 copper each…………..4 Silver
100 crates of barbed arrow tips 1,000 count per crate at 1 Gold tarn per……….50 DWG
100 crates of lance heads with rider hook 50 count per at 3 Silver Tarn per……15 DWG
10 crates of quiva sets at 10 sets per at 3 Gold Tarn per……….15 DWG
5 crates of spurs 40 pair count per at 1 silver per………………..5 Silver

These goods coming to a total of 81 DWG and 9 Silver plus trade of several crates of damaged arrow heads, spear tips, and broken quiva from the Kassar dust-up.

**************************************

Ragnar pauses at a Soap Merchant’s wagon along the way and inquires how much a 1 gorean weight barrel for unscented flake soap and for a crate of scented cake soap fifty cakes per. The Merchant as usual tries to highball, and RAGNAR lowballs in return. The Merchant continues to discount and Ragnar continues to lowball even further until the Merchant hits the price Ragnar wanted all long. 50 copper per barrel of flake and 1 silver per crate of cake. Then he informs the merchant he will take 100 of each totaling 5 DWG and 5 Silver.

**********************************************

Cassius will handle the negotiations and haggling this time around. The Merchant wishes 150 copper per two gorean weight barrel of flour. Ragnar has no need to interrupt as Cassius has the matter well in hand. To Cassius, that is akin to robbery and he tells the Merchant so. The Merchant laughs but stops as he notices Cassius does not laugh with him. He cuts a few coppers per but Cassius only shakes his head gesturing for the Merchant to do better. Another couple coppers are knocked off to which Cassius silences the Merchant with a hand gesture. “I seek bulk. Not just a few barrels. I wish a bulk price for one hundred barrels.” The Merchant still highballs Cassius and intends to stand firm until Cassius notices the Merchant brand on his forearm… and reminds him that if a Merchant’s goods are unacceptable, the Merchant is commonly slain upon the Plains. A threat? No… a statement of fact. Now the Merchant comes down to one silver per barrel and Cassius accepts that for a total of 5 DWG.

********************************************************

Ragnar and Cassius are still out shopping. Presently they are back in the grain warehouse inspecting the feed grains being offered. Ragnar checks for freshness, lack of mold and low dust content, whether sweet or bitter, and aroma. As he does so, he speaks in hushed tones to Cassius teaching him what to look for and what to avoid. Once the initial inspection is completed, RAGNAR dismisses all but three of the grain Merchants. The one he knows from past dealings, the other two are unknown to him. He will be somewhat wary of them even though their feed grain is of sound quality. Now Ragnar entertains offers of price cuts and discounts for bulk. Once again the Merchant known to Ragnar gives the best deal. The other two Merchants are dismissed and walk away extremely unhappy. Oh well, they should have looked more to bulk sales than individual units. Perhaps they will learn in time. As it stands, Ragnar will purchase 500 single grain sacks in one gorean weight at 50 copper per, coming to 1 DWG 1 Silver, and 500 multi grain sacks in one gorean weight sacks at 1 silver per coming to 25 DWG, totaling 26 DWG 1 Silver… delivery and loading included.

************************************************************

For the Cobbler Clan;

ten sets of leather working tools… 5 Silver each….. 5 Gold Tarns
10 crates of assorted dye pigment… 50 copper per….. 5 Silver Tarns
500 spools of assorted colors of heavy thread…… 1 Silver Tarn
Case of leather needles, 500 count..… 2 Silver Tarn
Total… 2 DWG 1 Gold Tarn 8 Silver tarns… And the Merchant threw in a bottle of palm wine for both Ragnar and Cassius.

************************************************************

RAGNAR had met with the oil merchant he had been seeking since arrival. Ragnar has bartered the best deal he could with the oil merchant. A freighter containing 4,000 empty two talu casks, binders, chains, etc, was bartered back to the merchant as a sort of deposit towards the new purchase of 10,000 two talu casks, give or take a few, and the freighter hauling them, binders etc. It took a good quarter afternoon to finally agree on a price. Ragnar managed to secure last season’s prices for the merchant’s entire current stock. The merchant has received the deposit wagon and casks etc, and has delivered the new wagon and the 10,000 casks etc costing the camp treasury 80 DWG. Though such a price did not even scratch the treasury built over the years, RAGNAR has decided that more raiding and looting is definitely in order.

***************************************************

For the Kaiila And Stock Clans;

8 creates Honey, three gorean stone per…….
10 crates Moss Paste, three stone per………..
15 crates blue grass, three stone per………….
40 crates wrapping gauze, 40 wraps per………

17 Talu Of Enzyme…………….

75 crates red olives……………
500 crates strawberries……….

Bulk sale totaling…………….. 28 DWG 1 Silver

*************************************************

Prism, lure, tharn, kadi, and chanz has seen to it RAGNAR’s commissary has once again been fully stocked with goods with likely even a bit of overstock just to get a better price. Being of the North, Ragnar does not share the disdain for things which come from the ground as most Tuchuks do. Rest assured there are plenty of suls, onions, garlic, katch, kort, tur pah, and all varieties of fruits… spices, as well as some rather hard to get rarities in wines as well as blackwine which he himself had to negotiate due to the extreme cost. Had it not been for a shady character refusing to state how he came by it, Ragnar would likely not have been able to secure it.

*************************************************

Salt

200 barrels white…………
100 barrels yellow………..
400 barrels red……………

Bulk sale totaling ………… 50 DWG

************************************************************

100 crates mixed vulo, 10 ct per, 5 copper per…… 2 Gold 1 Silver

All to be crated and delivered at dawn of day of departure (Thur)

****************************************************

Ragnar and Cassius continue on the shopping spree. They both look at the Vintner Lodge, then to one another, down the remainder of the palm wine and toss the empty bottles aside. They belch, and turn their attention to the lodge, kicking in the door and entering. There are a few Vintners inside that look at the sudden intrusion. Ragnar informs them they have the other Vintner caged awaiting Mercilayne’s collar, and have come to lay claim, in her name, to his property. Those inside begin to protest, but as each, Ragnar and Cassius place their hand to the quiva in their sashes, all argument ceases. They claim what is left;
2 large juice vats
200 cases, 24ct of new empty bottles
50 cases of 500 ct corks
100 cases of palm wine(much to their liking)
four new unassembled stills
4 kajira
Five hundred crates of larma
Five hundred crates of peaches
Two hundred crates of dates
One hundred crates of ka la na fruit
Six hundred crates of ta grapes
Fifty crates of cherries
600 cases of ramberry juice, 24 bottles per
600 cases of larma juice, 24 bottles per
1,000 Two Gorean Weight sacks of suls
500 Two Gorean Weight sacks of red sugar
500 Two Gorean Weight sacks of yellow sugar
500 Two Gorean Weight sacks of white sugar
200 2 Gorean weight barrels of yeast
8 wagons and teams with yokes and harness
Cassius sticks his head out of the lodge and whistles loudly. Tuchuk Warriors within earshot take note and come at the call. There is no further argument as to the ownership of the property. It is quickly loaded and taken to the Tuchuk wagon area where it will await Mercilayne. Minus of course two bottles of palm wine…. A sort of finders fee for Ragnar and Cassius.

Attended a phenomenal banquet and met some interesting people. I drank and consumed things I had never tasted and a few I had never even heard of. I quickly overindulged and had to excuse myself after the third course. Makes mental note to self - stay away from the black eel.

Sitting in our treasury wagon trying to make heads or tails of Sarant's system of filing reciepts and lading bills, her system is pretty much a pile of crumpled papers tossed on the table. Sorting through, it seems thus far most are missing. At least I can log the Auction results I have;

*************************

Report made by Raziel, to me, of one Askari Or Commander placed in chains at Raziel's freighter. Commander was issued orders to Guard NightStorm and was found eating in the food court. When questioned he had no idea where NightStorm was. A council of myself, Raziel, and Cassius was held and he was stripped of his command, his standing, and sentenced to be impaled outside the palisade at first light. Raziel has taken great offense as he was one under his Command... and this has been duly noted.

**************************
Reported to me one Warrior injured in fall from wagon platform during loading of supplies. Treated at The Point medical facility by Point Physician. Returned to wagons with fractured hip. Given kand knots to chew for pain. Word left for Taryn to confirm diagnosis and prescribe best course of action.

**************************

At my request, Cassius dispatched an Orlu of Outriders to leave this night for our nearest herd and to cut and drive enough team bosk to pull all the newly aquired wagons back home. They should return sometime tomorrow night before the sun rises the following day. This will allow the bosk to rest before having to make the return trip drawing wagons.

Ragnar wanders The Point doing some final shopping, trying to relax while still trying to think if anything he could procure has been forgotten. Behind him at a comfortable distance are several thralls, brought along to fetch and carry. NightStorm found a brown and a green shirt she favored last night, so he returned and purchased the same style in red, blue, yellow, two in white, and one in a sort of egg shell color. They are carefully wrapped and carried by one of the thralls.

***************************************************

Pausing, he recalls NightStorm saying how much she loved tastas. He begins haggling with a vendor of the stick candies and finally they agree on a price. He counts out the coinage as the vendor’s kajira carefully packs the goodies. Once packed, the girl stacks four cases each weighing a bit over a stone in a thrall’s arms. Ragnar has to chuckle and hopes she REALLY likes stick candies!!!

******************************************************

Once again RAGNAR pauses at a merchant booth. He begins commenting on a couple items which soon turns to haggling quietly. Low balling, high balling, give and take, eventually an acceptable price is reached. Ragnar counts out the coinage as the merchant wraps a new hair brush and a new hand mirror carefully and hands the package to one of the thralls. Repeating this once again, a second package is handed over. Both are finely detailed and silver plated… one for prism and one for flame. Handing the Merchant the coinage Ragnar bids him well and moves on.

*******************************************

Ragnar ducks into the Jewelers Lodge and closes the door behind him. There is only the Jeweler and himself present and he inquires as to what he wishes. The Jeweler nearly breaks his face as he smiles, and goes into the back room to return moments later with a finely crafted temwood box with ornate carvings and gold hardware, the black of the polished wood accentuating the brightness of the buffed gold. Opening the case, the crushed red velvet lining is beautiful, and as the cover piece is removed, revealed nestled within is a finely crafted gold hand mirror with precious gems mounted around the mirror and running the length of the handle. On the left side of the mirror rests a matching gold comb with the spine of the comb highlighted by etching and small diamond gems. On the right, a brush matching the comb and mirror. Ragnar nods his approval. Now the haggling begins. It takes a good half an ahn before a price is agreed upon. It was not cheap as this is all hand crafted and another will never be made by this Jeweler. Coinage is counted and the pouch slid across the counter. The beautiful case is bundled and wrapped and taken up by Ragnar. Bidding the Jeweler well, Ragnar exits the lodge and continues on his way keeping this package himself.

Tuchuk has left The Point and has headed for home. The temperature is unnaturally hot for this time of year and though usually chilly at night, it remains hot.

The column moves slowly under the heavily weighed down wagons, but it moves steadily. The heat, combined with the load, will require the column to move from water supply to water supply instead of taking a more direct route towards home.

When we reach the next water supply and all have pertaken, food will be prepared for those wishing it. It will be no feast, and on the lean side, but it will sit better during travel and keep the belly growlies away. Then, we shall move out for the next water supply.

End report

Tuchuk continues the homeward journey, thus far without incident. It still remains unusually hot for this time of year, and the wagons continue to make frequent stops to water the stock and when a water source is reached, to refill the huge water barrels.

As of this report, we have stopped to tend the stock and take on water. The long slow pace seems to have most people grumbly and growly. I will not push for speed at this stop. An easy pace might help a few dispositions. With this heat, I am concerned about our perishables. Though it will place an even higher strain on our water supplies, m instructions are to wet down the perishables at each water source, as well as the hide tarps covering them from the sun.

When the work is done, I expect to see, and will not discourage so long as short lived, some water hijinks. It will likely raise spirits as well as cool heated bodies.

End Report

Everything began with very unusual high temperatures for this season even given our wintering location.

The wagons have been travelling towards the main camp via water supply to water supply.

The wagons were overtaken by severe weather which developed into a tornado. The wagons managed to make it into a low cul de sak, or a low blind valley and overall weathered the weather front well all things considered.

One bosk was injured beyond saving, but was not wasted as it was spitted so all could at least get something on the stomachs.

Only a few dead have been accounted for and have been wrapped and placed on a wagon platform for the rest of the journey home. Twenty-three Outriders are missing, but it is possible many of them may return to the wagons. Time will tell.

Injuries for the most part have been reported minor. A few broken limbs, cuts, bruises, and a few lacerations requiring some minor suturing. The most prevalent injuries seem to be exposed skin was "sandblasted" by airborn particles, and eyes becoming dust caked requiring repeated flushing and care. So far as found as of this report, you are either dead or alive. There are none lingering on the edge.

The wagons have returned to the higher ground and must be inspected for damage, and repaired where necessary. The loads must be checked and re-secured. The heavy freighter containing the timber had to be abandoned when its load shifted and spilled as Tuchuk headed for cover. The bosk team, the repair wagon, 20 Outriders and fifty thralls have set out to recover what they can. A Rider did return to inform me the wagon was located, and is currently being reloaded and secured. A new tongue is being fitted into place and should join the rest of the wagons by morn.

It is my hope the wagons can once again move out for home by evening.

The temperature has fallen to normal and there is a chill in the air as a light rain falls.

End preliminary report

The wagons were able to roll once again sooner than expected, and made excellent progress having to stop only once more for water and to rest the teams.

The heavy freighter of timber was successfully salvaged and only a few timbers ended up missing, likely deposited upon the grasses somewhere. One timber was found embedded in the ground in our path. It was left therewhere Endless Sky placed it.

We also discovered a tarn complete with tarnsman in the grasses. When I say in the grasses, I mean IN THE GRASSES. It appears they were caught in the storm and did a serious powerdiving nose dive/face plant. The buzzard was smashed up to the saddle and the tarnsman was smashed into the ground as well. Wings outstretched, tail feathers sticking straight up towards the Sky. The last view of it was Sarant rifling through the gear and checking for any gold teeth or fillings in the remains of the tarnsman's skull.

The wagons made it home and into positions most useful. The personal wagons that made the trip were placed back into their assigned lots. The freighters are circled around the entire main area for offloading.

The perishables were the first wagons set upon by hundreds of slaves. The contents will be inspected as they are unloaded to save space in their storage. Overly ripe items may be used or discarded as the case may be. The remaining wagons may be unloaded in order of importance or expiration. When completed, the freighters are to be returned to their areas and all bosk teams returned to their areas to graze and recover from the journey.

I shall be riding out to inspect the herds upon completion of report. I shall return as soon as duty permits. (NightStorm knows the details so between her and woobie info will get relayed.)

I would declare this venture to The Point for supplies as a success.

Unload and settle in... rest and relax as much as possible the next few days, and life will return to normal.

Well done Tuchuk!!!

Report for RAGNAR

I made a thorough walk through camp this night.  The offloading and organizing of supplies is going about as quickly as one can expect.  The Clans are making good headway in emptying the freight wagons.

Otherwise, all is quiet in Tuchuk.

-= Report by Taryn =-

Clan of Healer supplies have been unloaded and placed in the medical freight wagon, next step is to re-stock the inner and outer circle medical wagons which will begin tomorrow.

I have been ordered to get rest by Nicolas, as I haven't had much sleep since we arrived back in camp. This was ordered by Nicolas and I am actually going to listen and take tonight to sleep, though there is still much yet to get done and organized.

1 crate of botas ( 50 botas )

2 crates of silks

2 crates of repcloths

2 crates of cheesecloths in varying degrees of fineness

a whole set of crates one nested inside another, the smallest being only big enough to hold a ring or something of similar size

1 crate of goblets ( 40 goblets )

1 crate full of spurs ( 20 pair )

2 kailla saddles in decent condition

in the process of finding these items, I make sure that they get distributed to the appropriate locations in Camp
