...appears to have had a heart attack. His blood pressure was 90/50, his pulse 44. Chest pain, no pain in his arm; cold and clammy but sweating profusely. He started out semi-conscious after a near-faint but was coming around as the ambulence arrived. The paramedics are transporting him to the hospital for further stabilization.
I don't know when or if I'll be online for the remainder of the day and/or week.

your "Pop-Pop" is in my thoughts and prayer as well as the rest of your family deemon daughter.

The docs stabilized my Pop-Pop last night, briefly, by giving him a clot-busting drug to open up his heart valves. He was transferred to ICU and placed under observation, where his blood pressure rose to 120/60. We even managed to watch "Survivor" -- our Thursday night tradition -- before he wanted some sleep.
And then the clot-buster wore off and his valves started closing again. He was rushed to the cardiology center 45 minutes away, where they ran a catheter up his leg and sent dye to his heart. They discovered that his right valves were 98% blocked, and there were some less severe blockages on the left side of the heart as well. They then sent a baloon into the areas, to expand them, and put in stints to keep them wide open. I believe a temporary pace-maker was put on him as well...
At this point, he's in good spirits, I am told. Wanting his false teeth and glasses so he can eat his lunch.
My parents are staying with him while I keep my grandmother, an Alzheimer's patient, from going crazy without him. She's disoriented by the fact he's not here. So I lay down with her last night until she fell asleep, then slept in my grandfather's chair in the living room. I'll be doing that for a few nights...
-
owies... definitely naught an easy go of it. my prayers will continue, rest assured.
now at this point... i must ask... do they feel the blockages will be the issue or has the heart itself taken a hit from all this leaving it with damage? i know stints and angioplasty are common procedures to deal with problems of this nature. it may even lead to possible bypass. i know this is the last thing you really wished to hear or think about but knowing you to be a very up front cut the crap type person i am hoping this is taken in the spirit it is intended.
i have always been one to feel the pipes can usually be taken care of so long as the pump hangs in there.
please keep me informed deemon daughter.

They do feel there has likely been some damage, with the length of time the heart attack lasted. The event was "silent" -- not many warning pains, no pain in his left arm, and no heaviness in the chest beforehand -- but acute. They haven't had time to run many more tests or do many procedures other than those necessary to save his life. I believe they're letting him rest today before doing other tests tomorrow. Now, it's just a waiting game... But Pop-Pop's spirits are high, and he's talking about being around for an uninterrupted Thanksgiving next year... *smiling*
And Papa... thankyou... I'd rather take realistic advice than happy purple smoke up my ass...*L* Love you...
Love you all...

*huggles* My thoughts are with you darlin..and with your Family... I know some of what your going through and the thoughts going through your head....as My father was informed a few months ago that He needs a quadruple bypass...He's still waiting.....they are hoping sometime in February to get Him in for the procedure as He is like 25th on the waiting list *sighs* but....they also told Us that if He has a heart attack.....He will most liekly not live for a number of variables.....not the least of them being that He lives 45 minutes away from ANY sort of medical help....so yes I can understand sweetie....and know I am here for you whenever you need it.

~leaves huggles for you and yours and lots of good thoughts going your way~

very well. waiting is the hardest part. it is likely they will be looking at several options for testing.... unfortunately some can be unpleasant. but this depends upon just what they feel he is capable of handling. but when they get a handle on things they will be better able to ascertain just how much damage was done. the heart is a strange organ daughter. it is as tough as they come yet also as fragile.
just do naught lose hope. do naught let him lose hope. remember... my heart is working at less than 25% according to the experts and you have seen i am still hanging in there. a bit slower... somewhat more careful... but there is still a great deal of things i am able to accomplish. the activities at the gathering proved that to you.
*huggers* :-*

I have some tentative good news!
The temporary pacemaker was taken off today... It was external, so the procedure caused him no pain... They have decided that the blockages on the left side are relatively minor and will not require stints... I assume time and meds will remove them... No open heart surgery will be needed at this time, provided all remains well... Blood pressure is 113/63, pulse 74... His color is good, his hands and feet are warm, so circulation is good.... Spirits are high... He will be moved to the general ward tomorrow!

OUTSTANDING!!! ;) :-*

any further updates deemon daughter?

I have some GREAT news and some kinda not-so-good news...
Pop-Pop came home today, and he's in excellent spirits! He's a bit weak and tired easily, but that's to be expected. My grandmother took one look at him and... returned to her NORMAL level of battiness, so THAT is good as well. *LOL*
But... those blockages on the left side of his heart were more severe than the doctor at first believed, and he's being scheduled for open heart surgery -- a triple bypass. I feel that my grandfather will pull through it in as fine a manner as he has bounced back from two acute heart attacks, but Pop-Pop is quietly terrified.
We also had a huge family meeting during which it was decided that my husband should NOT seek employment, at least for the time being. He's been out of work since a short-lived job ended some two months ago, and he had been actively placing applications all over town. My family now feels it was providence that no one called him back. My grandfather and his best friend, Danny, can use Ben's help in the garage; and when Danny has to run errands for the business, Ben will be home to ensure that Pop-Pop is never alone with just Mom-Mom in the event of a medical emergency. (Another cardiac arrest + an Alzheimer's patient who no longer remembers how to use the phone = baaaaaaaad situation.)
Hubby is actually quite cheerful about the prospect of cooking, cleaning, working on cars and tractors, and lending a hand wherever he is needed; I'm relieved that my grandfather and grandmother will have additional care while I am at work; and my family has stopped insinuating that my husband is a deadbeat who just doesn't WANT to be employed -- so it all works out.
Well, except for that whole... waiting for the bypass to be scheduled thing... ~is on pins and needles~
I'd like to thank everyone for their wonderful thoughts and well wishes... Means more than I can say... ~tight hugs...~ As I have known for a very long time, MTC truly is a family...

*smiles soft and hugs you*
God never closes one door without opening another. Ben will be a good care-giver both to your Pop-pop and to your girl.. and I am keeping Pop-Pop still in my prayers.. and your grandmother too.. though I can tell you from my GOM experience.. that sometimes it is nice when they don't remember things .. *giggling*..

dee, talena told me about your Pop-Pop, and I was so sorry to hear. It's troubling when our loved ones are reduced to fear and I will keep you and yours in my prayers that all will come around just fine.
It's good to hear that he is now home. -smiles- That's half the battle won and strength to be garnered before his surgery. I send your way multitudes of positive energy and hope.

Reading the pamphlets sent home with Pop-Pop, it would seem that most patients are out of the hospital within five days. That much relieved him, and he has far fewer fears now that he is more knowledgeable about the procedure.
Papa, you betcha I'm getting him a big, stuffed, abuseable-type teddy for him to hug... He's gonna be hurtin'... It'll hurt me to see it... ~sighs~
woobiekins, I've taken to calling my CRS-afflicted Mom-Mom the GOG... Grumpy Ol' Gal... It's better than DOB or MOC -- "deluded old bat" or "mad old cow." ~ducks~
amore and kadi and lure and taleeeeeenabobina and and Mistresses Moosie and Taryn, thank-ya for the well-wishes and good vibes!

Pop-Pop has had two nights of wonderful, refreshing sleep and says he is feeling better than the week or two before his heart attacks! His strength and the duration he is able to be up and around are also improving. Those stints are definitely helping him get better blood and O2 flow! He even swept Mom-Mom into a spirited two-step when an old, familiar song started playing on his Big Band Music TV channel... *grinning* (Made me misty, I tell ya, seeing those two smiling and laughing, imagining them as they must have been in their youth.)
~hugs to lure and aphris for their continued thoughts, then kisses my Papa a big one right on the lips...~
-
~leaves hugs for my a-s~
my mom improved 20000% once she was home, rather than at the hospital where we thought she should be....

While I was at work, my grandfather was again taken to the hospital. It looks like he's had another heart attack... At this point, I have no further information.
Ben and I are currently holding down the fort, keeping both Mom-Mom and kiddo occupied until we can head to the hospital as a family. My parents aren't even aware that Pop-Pop is back in the hospital. My mother is a self-employed domestic, my dad is a carpenter, neither owns a cell phone, and their job sites vary day by day, so they are unreachable... Hopefully they'll come home from work soon...

As best I can understand, this is how things stand:
Last Wednesday, just before my grandfather was released from the hospital, his heart doctor, Agorwol, waltzed in and announced, "We're signing you out, but you have to come back in a few weeks." When my very bewildered grandfather asked why, Agorwol replied, "Because we need to do a bypass on the right side." The bombshell thus dropped, out the doctor went -- and a family friend visited my grandfather moments later, only to find him in tears. My grandfather fears hospitals, and the way in which the news was broken was insensitive, to say the least.
Then we discovered that the bypass could have been done that very day, but Agorwol preferred to schedule the surgery for six weeks from now because my grandfather "had made it clear that he wished to go home." That's all well and good -- yes, Pop-Pop very much DID want to go home -- but the option of having the surgery last Wednesday was never presented! My grandfather would have vastly preferred ONE lengthy hospitalization to ICU, Round Two!
Fast forward to 1 p.m. today, when a heart attack hit the left side of Pop-Pop's heart, near where there are already stints in place -- NOT on the right side, where Agorwol claims there are blockages to be bypassed.
Two Nitro pills and three Bayer Aspirin stopped the event within minutes, and my grandfather is currently stable. The ambulance skipped the local hospital and delivered him directly to the Cardiology Center in Salisbury, Maryland, where he was eventually transferred last time. It ended up being a smart move, because the best heart surgeon in the Del-Mar area just happened to be on an ER rotation today, and he just happens to be the personal doctor of Danny, my grandfather's best friend. Danny showed this other doctor my grandfather's heart scans and pictures, and this surgeon announced, "I don't know why there are 35 pictures here, when the cardiologist only should have needed 10, but they are all of such poor quality that I honestly cannot tell you where the bypass sites are supposedly located."
Translation: In six weeks' time, Agorwol would have opened up my grandfather's chest and commenced blindly poking and prodding without any accurate, medically sound impression of WHERE blockages needed to be bypassed and WHERE new valves needed to be attached. Although no one is saying so, I have a feeling that the surgery would probably have been botched, and that if the screw-up hadn't killed him, he would have had to go under the knife a second time.
And so this surgeon has taken over my grandfather's care and will do his own angioplasty, take his own pictures, and if necessary, perform bypasses on the CORRECT sites. He is also going to figure out where else stints might be needed on the left side of the heart. In his words, "Mr. Wilkerson just had the same exact heart attack that he did on Thanksgiving day, in the same location. Obviously, his stints did not open the blockage that is causing the cardiac events; they just opened two other problem sites."
So I don't know what will need to be done, but it would seem that my Pop-Pop is in the best possible hands; and that if it weren't for today's events, the full picture of Agorwol's fuckups would never have been made clear.

even in the bad there is good.
stick with this doc and see what happens. few if any ever shoot another one down in flames... unless of course they are very good and have no qualms about hanging the quacks out to dry.
hopefully this will be taken care of and tis problem solved. just be sure to inquire how much if any this second attack may have damaged the heart muscle. hopefully if it was temporarilly avoided so quickly there is minimal damage.
will keep the thoughts and prayers going strong!!!
*huggers* kissssssssssssssssssssssssss

Oh geez. Looks like Cleveland doctors AND Maryland doctors are on my "to kill" list. -shakes head and hugs you tight- hang in there, little sister. I can't imagine what I would do if it were my PopPop (and yup, my Grandfather is also called PopPop by us grandkids). But be strong, you and yours are in my thoughts and my prayers.
-
you and yours are still in my thoughts hun ~hugs~
-
Amber, the Cleveland doctors are just fine.
deelicious... You and yours are always in my prayers.. I think maybe this second bout happened because God wanted your Pop-pop in the right hands..
love you..
woobie
-
it is the Salem doctors you may slay!!! LOL
-
Actually, the new doc, McClean, DID hang the quack out to dry!
Apparently, McClean used to be Agorwol's partner. They had a falling out precisely because Agorwol was profiting from unethical, unnecessary procedures, and McClean formed his own practice.
Between 3 and 4 p.m. today, another heart catheterization and angioplasty were performed. The ten new, very clear pictures revealed a very small blockage on the right side of the heart -- a blockage so small that medication should break it up. Bypass surgery will NOT be necessary. The issue simply isn't that serious. Two more stints were placed on the left side of the heart to open the blockages Agorwol missed two weeks ago, which should prevent any futher cardiac arrests due to lack of oxygen and blood flow. The pictures and EKG readings also displayed very, very minimal damage to the heart. In fact, it looks like my grandfather will be coming home tomorrow, almost as good as new.
We are so very blessed.
-
whew..... *huggers my deemon daughter tight* :-* ;) :D
-
*hugs deeeeeeeeeeeeelicious*
thank you God.
-
With the exception of the doctors that worked on Master Papa, Cleveland doctors should be slain....
-
My grandfather just came home about an hour ago. Due to a nasty mixture of sleet and snow that nixed school today, I was able to witness the way my grandmother's face lit up when Pop-Pop walked through the door, the way she hugged him with such joy as she whispered, "There you are... I was looking for you... I kept looking..."
Dr. McClean feels that there will be no need for bypass surgery -- not tomorrow, not years from now. My grandfather says he is planning to take his medicine faithfully and to be around for many, many more years.
Thank you all for your prayers...
