Another Goody For The Oldtimers

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Keds (only worn in gym)
instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything. Then, once a year we'd all have to line up at her office for our floride treatments; sitting in the chair holding soaked cotton rolls in our mouth until she was through with the previous kid!

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a singl e person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T- SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING
Pass this to someone (over age 40, of course), and brighten their day by helping them to remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often the best!
I'd say Amen, but that wouldn't be politically correct.

I remember vividly how my Mom, with a passle of kids (for you non-Southerners, a passle is a helluvalot) in the backyard, and when we would run en masse inside to tattle or holler or whatever, loud and riotous, she would say very loudly....

QUIET!!

and as the mob stilled to silence, she would say...

Is anyone bleeding or broken?

and when we would reply.... NO..

She would whip out that "mother's finger" (Y'all know how it points.. LOL)
and say...

Then get back out in that yard and PLAY!

Amen Amen Amen to all that stuff... and to borrow a phrase from my Gramma...

That's what's wrong with the kids of today...

In fact last night I got into Donna Reed mode and baked some 100 percent homemade cookies and as I looked sadly at all that dough, I thought, "I remember when I could eat half the bowl of dough and now? They say we'll die from samonella or whatever." I couldn't help it, I took a few nibbles of the dough. Okay, so if I die...

I was thinking just that too, wow, not just CUT a chicken, but kill the thing first, then butcher it up and of course there was the potato salad and all that mayo and chopped up egg all completed on that same chopping board with only a swipe of cloth in between.

And OMG. I remember my Mama paddling the bunch of brats in my neighborhood (and I got one too of course ~blinks~) and then we all got a major reaming from THEIR Mama, and OMG then their DAD came in and forget it, we were doomed.

And later that night, their mom and dad and my mom would exchange a pie or cake or something and joke about their jobs and meanwhile, all us kids would be there red-bottomed and quite well-behaved watching Ed Sullivan. Of course, AFTER we did our homework and helped with dishes.

Yep Yep Yep.

Them good old days.

We would not dare tell a grown up to "get a life and fuck off" let alone our parents.

We would be so dead.

Not that we were particularly innocent back then but .....

Anyway... AMEN!!!!!!!

What until your father gets home... actually it was a cartoon, but that best describes what happened in our house... but yea... paddlings, you do that now, the kids will call the cops or tell a teacher that you are abusing them... ~blah~ spoiled rotten kids...

I think the worst of the worst really was when Mom or Gramma said.. go get the spoon... cause you know you never want to piss of either of them really they ruled the roost...

I remember being able to stay out till 8pm an that was late playin kick the can an all sorts of things in the dark of the nights... with no worry of any harm coming to me lest I was late to return to Our yard.. then you knew all holy hell was gonna hit the fans...

any whooooooooossss thanks for puttin this out there.. is good to remember sometimes.. helps to scare off the hebejebes of the time of year....

ps an yes woobie I may not be a southener but I knew what a passel was..lol.. so yuall have a great day ye hear... *grins an runnnnnnnnnnnnns*

When a belt to your butt kept you walking the straight and narrow.
When a teacher could spank you and you knew when you got home, dad would too.
When you actually sat together around the dinner table, said grace and waited for something to be passed your way instead of the "reach and grab".
I remember when we could ride the last bus downtown, and I live in a capitol city not a small town) and walk home without feeling the least bit scared because there was nothing to be afraid of.
I remember when having a TV was a luxury not a necessity and there are times when I wish it were still the same.

Anyway, it was nice to remember some of the, "the good ole days".
