Title: awol by force
Post by: nizhoni{Din'Shular} on February 08, 2007, 12:09:19 AM
apparently, some genius thinks it's hilarious to hack into my system and throw it into complete failure.  nothing will work correctly on my computer, i can't even get any of my programs to come up.  i ran a boot scan and that came up with 126 viruses, Adware and Spyware.  so i'm royally screwed until i can get this stupid thing fixed.  until that time, i'll be able to get on to check the boards and maybe come into Camp ooc if i'm able to get onto my mom's laptop to check emails and whatnot.  i promise i haven't suddenly decided to make senior mats and then just disappeared.  lol  i don't have a choice in this particular matter.  hopefully i'll have it fixed and will be up and running back in Camp in no time at all.  keep fingers crossed!

Ad-aware (for ad ware), Spy bot (for Spyware of course), Avast Anti Virus, and switch browsers to FireFox (Or Opera as some people like it, I don't, but still) as IE has too many security issues.

I use Zonealarm with Antivirus... costs like $20 a year but it seems to work well so far. As many issues as I have with PC attacks right now it seemed a good investment. They also have a free firewall that works pretty well. For free options, I have heard good things about that AVG that everybody's talkin about.
Anyhoo, hope you make it back in soon, meg. See ya in Camp  :)

That royally sucks hon.

Me and my techie other half both recommend Trend PC-Cillin.  It's got a great firewall/security suite as well and the price is reasonable.  It's one of the top anti-virus/firewalls/anti-spyware you can use and it's anti-phishing is fantastic.

AVG is all right; the free version doesn't allow upgrades.  In my techie news, I've heard that AVG is ending their free program and charging minimally instead.

Stay away from McAfee and Norton.  Besides screwing with your operating system, Norton is often unable to prevent/fix virus and worm attacks.  McAfee as well is often targeted by the worms as well, rendering the program ineffective.

Despite that for all of our computers here at home (we have SIX! eeps), we have the best firewall ever; Novell, additionally I still run Zone Alarms if I'm going to do some browsing into unknown territory, and have both AdAware and SpyBot running (each will catch different spyware).

A lot of very hard work goes into designing programs; I don't recommend cheating to get the full versions.  Pay the small fee; the author of the program deserves compensation.

Live One Care http://get.live.com/onecare/features (http://get.live.com/onecare/features) it is $49 a year but it really works like a dream.

please stay away from Norton and McAfee... they both will make your life a living hell... I should know, lived with both of them.. first it was McAfee, got my dad to get away from it, then we both went to Norton and when we got hit with that really nasty virus NIMDA and it completely bypassed Norton as well as making it completely useless we went looking for another anti-virus and that's when we found Avast.. switched to that and have never looked back...

Got my sister off of Norton when I showed her how many virii her computer had, she had well over 8 major and 40 minor plus tons of adware and spyware... that was a nightmare and a half.. but she learned and got rid of it, well most of it, as it embeds itself into your computer system
