here's the scoop about our new camp!
The river is approximately a day from the main fire, a couple hours from the outer perimeter of camp, 's for water's edge are basically going to put you at one of the springs unless you want to be a day from camp, so keep that in mind.
Water for consumption or other uses are drawn from the fresh water springs...laundry will be done in tubs, one to wash, one to rinse.
Water needing to be discarded will be poured into barrels...the barrels will be taken by wagon outside the camp and dumped on the plains
Drinks are still being cooled in the springs near the commissary area.

~makes a note of that and nods~
thank You Mistress :)

yes, MIstress...thank You for the information that surely will come in hand
*grins*

Thanks for the info Sis. Always good to know where the fresh water supply is LOL.
-
has it copyed and ready to go
-
Thanks Sis... with me and my love of living at the river, I guess that's not going to happen that often.. ~winks~

just a reminder to our newer members that the cooling wagons are not in use. The weather is still too warm. cold drinks are kept in nets....meat is used as quickly as possible with the remainder dried to make jerky...some perishables are wrapped in oilskin and put in the cold springs.
-
Thanks Kels...I've noted all this.

Noted... I should have read this earlier.

makes a note but will it be somewhat same when we get to new campsite?

There are cold springs located throughout the camp. The river is a good day's journey on foot, round trip, from the main fire.
The bosk have been broken down into their smaller herds and are daily rotated about the camp and the plains allowing for access to water supplies and to avoid any stampede or raid from ever taking more than a few at a time in comparison to the whole.
The routine for discarding waste water remains unchanged.
Bring the cooling wagons back into good order for use.

what needs to be done to get the cooling wagons back in action? is it something i could do?

a good cleaning is always needed after migration, checking to make sure the flap on the top of the roof is in good repair...would just be a few things onyx~s
here's the link for the commisary area (the cooling wagon section is about half way down the page), should give you an idea or two on what to do with it all. http://www.webmaze.com/memberpages/raziel/slave_servingarea.html (http://www.webmaze.com/memberpages/raziel/slave_servingarea.html)
hope that helps :)

thank you, sis. now, i think i may hav a sugjestion for keeping the wagons cooler. it came to me because i had ice cream last night. at cold stone creamery. they keep thier marble slab cold by running cold water under it. is there a possable way that we could add a channel or four under the wagon. then fill it with cold stones the size's of footballs, roughly, then pour cold water around them? we could place the things that need to be the coldest in the wagon directly above the channels. there would need to be a way to drain and replace the water, but i think it would last a while because the water would cool the stones and then stones would hold the coolness... just a thought.
-
the springs located thru the camp prob have earth cooled water
maybe, rather than construct something.. the cool wagon could
be atappted to fit over spring.. (a trapdoor?).. this would also
have the added benfits of keeping the water in the shade..
and stoping a lot of airborne debris ( grass dust, bugs) from
getting in the water.
with some careful planning,, maybe even ir would not be a prob
to get in a load up water buckets

The marble holds its coolness most likely due to the steady flow of cool water. The wagons sit six feet off the ground. That is a great deal of air to compensate for. We usually place those items requiring refridgeration the most into the cold water course itself. The trick it to be able to remain mobile at all times. Rocks and water moving, pouring, unloading, woud that really be feasible for maintaining mobility?
Keep up the ideas. *S*

Again.... that six foot space between the wagon platform and the ground would negate any positive affect. Dust and bugs are a natural aspect of life on the Plains. A trapdoor in the bottom of a wagon is not going to have any affect in minimising these. In all actuality.... all the dust, debris, etc falling fom the underside of the wagon each time someone walked across the platform would be worse than open air.

a point i had not considered.. perhaps then a lean to over the sping.. simple to put up
and take down

it would if the work was done by hamstrung thralls or kettles.. it comes down to
a matter of how cold You wish the items to be..vs. the labor requirements
thank You Master

not trying to step on Master Ubars toes...but this one had a thought (skeery isn't it? :o :o )
from looking at the new camp map http://www.webmaze.com/memberpages/ragnar/winter07.jpg (http://www.webmaze.com/memberpages/ragnar/winter07.jpg), there only seems to be three cold springs with in the inner circle, all of which get used to store juices (when we get them back~s), milk, wines, paga, sul-paga, ect.... to keep them as cold as possible. the wagon it seems from where this one sits...are used more or less as a cooling area, not so much like a big refrigerator. but to keep some items shaded in the confines there till they get rotated to the springs and or used.
once long ago, MTC used to pour water over the flooring to keep the wagon cooler, however with the rotting of wood that happened, it wasn't very sanitary, and wood isn't something all that easy to come by out on the plains for replacing the floor boards as needed.
also, at the moment, most of the thralls are busy repairing the medical wagon from the outer circle, and then they need to get busy on the main one in the inner circle ~chuckles as ST seems to constantly have it in for med wagons for some reason~
anyways...there's lots to be done, from unpacking the commissary wagon...building the ovens again (making the bricks from mud and molds...very intense stuff)...drying all that bosk meat acquired from the crossing of the R.O.T....setting up the vulo pens (trying to get them relaxed to start laying eggs again)...checking out the kailla from the Outriders, and tending to them...patching up any damage to wagons...helping get everything all unpacked through out camp as well as aiding in the redoing of the med wagons ;)
okies...lure will hush now... ;D

for hamstring no..but the thought does occur to him about
the use of damaged property...and this links over to the
cruelty thread.. at what point is property upkeep more work
than it is worth ?.. he hnows that You have two hamstrung
thralls in DRAGONSLAIR as has always assumed that they are
their ( .. and hamstruned) as a punishment.. is this wrong ?

When the service provided does not seem worth the amount of food and drink consumed, what it costs to clothe and keep the property, and whatever else expense is wrapped up in the property. Add all that cost up and look at the service provided by the property and decide if it is all worth it.
Does it state anywhere they were hamstrung as punishment?
If not... never assume boy.
To keep my floor coverings clean and to circulate air within my wagon the two thralls hold their value to me.
Just for argument's sake.... for the moment... let us say the slaves were hamstrung as a punishment. I do not see this as cruel at all. In all likelihood they knew that whatever act they committed would earn them punishment including hamstringing. In all likelihood they accepted this risk when they committed the act(s).
In my eyes.. that is voluntary stupidity. In their eyes, an acceptable risk.
Do remember... there are many ways in which one might get hamstrung considering the life we lead.
It may well have occurred as a result of an accident, and rather than dispose of the slaves, they were given their current duties.
It may even be the reason they are now slaves... if it occurred as a result of a combat inflicted wound.
