Title: Military leave
Post by: Salem on October 10, 2008, 02:46:54 PM
As I may have mentioned to some of you every now and then over the past couple of months, I am pursuing a military career. Well, nothing definite yet of course, but today I received a phone call and have a lengthy six-hour interview next thursday to discuss my application, go through the medical screening and physical, etc. Figured I would start this thread to be able to keep tabs on my situation, and update it as necessary.

If all goes well, I may be shipping out sooner than expected, but we'll see. =)

It took entirely too long, but I finally cut through the red tape. lol

I did get the trade I wanted, which was Weapons Technician. I ship out for basic on March 7th and start on the 9th, and begin the four month grind at that point. As for me, I have a week left to enjoy sleeping in, having a beard, and not be run ragged everyday. But it an experience that I am really looking forward to. I am not sure when exactly I will be able to rp or visit the boards again after I leave, but I hope that I will be able to once I finish basic and move on to MOC (Military Occupational Course) training for my trade. Maybe around August or September.

I will miss you all when I leave, but I will also look forward to when I will be able to return to camp again and see you all again.

I got a phone call tonight.

He is alive, exhausted, and misses everyone very much.  Besides missing His hair, Salem says He's adjusting well, and isn't the oldest man there. ;)
He got to leave base last night, and found a bar. Three guesses who got loose and the first two don't count.

He's hoping to get online soon and at least cruise the boards.

I feel better now!

Apparently!  Cause my boot camp had barb wired and huge gates, and fences and stuff, and we weren't allowed to go anywhere until the two days after graduation before we left for our schools when I was in.  And that was the Navy -rofl-

Does anyone know which Camp Salem went to basic at? Because we just found out a few weeks ago that OE's baby Brother enlisted too and shipped out to basic trainign the same day as Salem. We are wondering if perhaps they might be in the same training center. We figured OE's baby Bro would be the oldest at boot camp LOL since He is 28. Anyway we are just curious..would be kinda cool if they know each other.

As I posted on his Facebook when he announced he had been let out for the weekend after week 2... OMG They let you out during basic? aren't they afraid you will lose everything they have taught you in those 2 weeks? ~snorts~ Even Ray was shocked, then he also remembered it was in Canada and since they make you do all the hard work before you go in, then they think that letting you out on week 2 is a good thing for morale...

So much for the whole..."We have more longer and advanced training" concept.  I can see why.  They let you out after a week or so and then have to retrain you each time.  That is pretty sad.

I did both Navy and Army.  They were the same.  Train train train...then maybe, before graduation you got liberty/weekend pass.

And going to a bar and getting loose?  Well, there are some smarts right there.  Good exemplary leadership skills in the making.  You talk to him again, tell him he should crap on the bar hopping.  Wont look good on his jacket/fitrep if he gets kicked out for drinking and getting caught up in a barfight.  I cannot count how many times I would have to go and get my guys out of jail or from the bar because they were stupid.  And they werent even in basic.  Fast track straight to court martial and/or brig right there.

yea my old roomie had gotten a dishonroable discharge from the navy... why? all he did was get drunk... when he was ordered to to pt he didnt cause he was alwyas too hung over to go... then when they were gonna leave to go on a ship and do a one month training... he was so hung over the he threw up on the bus... so they pulled over... kicked him off the bus and left his ass on the side of the road while they all went to go get on the ship...

then... after a very hung over three mile walk back to the barracks... they told him he was being kicked out for failing to follow the movements of his ship!

-laughs- so yeah someone tell salem that hes better off looking at the bar then actuaccly going into it!

The methods of training in Canada may seem odd and strange to those of us in The States.

However... we do acknowledge this was a choice my True made to serve his Country. That can't be taken away from him nor can it be overlooked because their training is different.  I have no doubt he is just as Patriotic and proud of Canada as we are of The United States.

I know none here are directing anything negative towards Salem. We are mostly just a bit taken aback by the training methods, since they are so far removed from what Basic is in the U.S.

Even I am at a bit of a loss. It seems odd to me to encourage my True with "hang tough".... "hang in there".... etc.... when he is permitted to go party. But no matter.

True... serve and learn well... be the best you can possibly be.

You are missed!

Well, I am finally now officially not confined to barracks, so maybe a little light can be shed on this since computer access for me is very limited.

One, I did not go bar trolling. Our garrison has it's own bistro/bar that I went to. I was allowed to leave base ONCE since I got here to report with my platoon to QM for kit parade to get my ruck, clothes, uniforms, dress, ffo or full fighting outfit, and gear.

Two, when I said on facebook that I was free for the weekend, I meant that our platoon managed to get through the week without fucking up too badly and we were spared PT, inspections, and drill for that period of time. We are not always so fortunate. Good thing I am great at ironing and hospital corners already.

Three, I do not have to retrain every week thank you muchly. Recruits get recoursed for failing even just a few exams or being swiped for being a kitfuck or forgetting gear for forced marches. We call those people shitpumps. I have busted my balls with PT twice a day, drill classes, which by the way, makes quite a few other armies drill look like sloppy shit, change parades, punishments for other recruits fucked up locker and kit inspections, climbing 12 stories to my bunk six or more times a day for over four weeks now.

I do not party. I take my contract and commitment to my country very seriously. Very soon I will begin working with my platoon with rifles for the first time, and get my beret cap badge. I have already been sick with an eye infection, bronchitis, a knee problem, colds and yet when my Master Corporal or Sergeant gives me shit, I take it like all the rest and persevere.

Our training methods are not as different from yours as you might think. Use the following schedule from a typical day as a guideline.

Wake-up: 0500
Morning Physical Training: 0510 to 0550
Breakfast: 0600 to 0700
Inspection/Training: 0700 to 0740
Training: 0755 to 1110
Lunch   : 1120 to 1200 or 1210 to 1250 or 1300 to 1340
Training: 1350 to 1610 or 13:50 to 1705
Dinner: 1620 to 1705 or 1715 to 1755
Training: 1800 to 2000
Spare time for kit work, boots, ironing, laundry, personal maintenance: 2000 to 2300
Lights out:   2300

Feel free to peruse the official school site for a better understanding on what it is really like to be doing what I am doing.

Clarifications aside, I miss my family, and hope to have pictures soon.

While reading the posts in this thread I couldn't figure out whether to laugh or get indignant at the comments seeming to be against My Country..I'm Canadian, was raised as an army brat and live in the Airbase town from which some of our guys go out from...and unfortunately all that come back in a casket come in through. It's definately not all that different from what you all went through in basic training, though, and I'm sure Salem is being worked hard as hell.
I wish You all the best, Bro, and am proud as hell of You.

Tal, Family.

Soooooo...I realize I have not updated in some time. But better late than never I suppose.

During basic training last year, I was injured during field training, and although I did graduate, I was left with a nagging persistent ankle injury that would not heal.

Long and short of it, I had a piece of bone and cartilage lodged in my ankle for a year or so after the original injury before I was able to get the surgery I required in order to fix the problem. I made no mention of this as I had no wish to cause anyone to wonder or worry needlessly. Suffice to say, after a bit of PT and physio, lacking some lost stability and strength, its almost back to 100% again.

In the meantime, I have been over the past eight months hard at work at what we refer to as QL3, or trade qualifications. Very soon, I will be finished with this and be a fully qualified weapons technician. I am sorry that I have not taken the time to keep in better touch, but after stressful weeks of studying, exams, practical work, endless overnight duty shifts, travel between work, taking care of the daily grind in my quarters, kit work, routine, routine, routine, that at the end of the day all I want to do is just bury my face in the pillow so I can get at least 6 hours of sleep and start the day all over again. Fortunately, our country's commitment to Afghanistan is soon to end, and although I had wanted to get a tour of duty, unfortunately this will not happen due to workup training prior to deployment from this time forward overlaps the date in which our troops will be pulled out in 2011.

I miss you all very much, and I would be naive as well as a liar if I had said that thoughts of you all did not get me through some of the rougher patches. Please just bear with me and know that I am still out there and I will be able to return and be a part of a much more regular schedule in the near future. Thank you for any and all thoughts that may have been sent my way in my absence. I will be dropping in very soon so keep an eye out.

Until then, I wish you all well.

Its about time True!!! I was starting to think you were elected to hold the targets on the range.

Good to hear you are nearly back to 100%!!! Ask Raz about painful legs and ankles. He prefers duct tape to treatment. LOL

Looking forward to having you back again and making time for Sid and your family. Hang in there and do what you need to do and before you know it your training will be a memory.

Hey now...that duct tape held my broken ankle together long enough to finish the last 6 miles of road march before I was given permission to pass out...LOL.

As Rags said...it's about time!
