ok bro, i have told you that my sister is a die hard steelers fan just like you, it shows to the point i know some of the glory days of the 70's the storys from that and i wasnt even born and im a cowboys fan... she recently bought a dvd of the history of the steelers.

so here we go

what were the origoinal names of the Steeler teams when the franchise was just starting?(meaning before they became the steelers.. )

and i realize this might be very simple for you
Title: Re: Withdrawl

1933 Pirates
Title: Re: Withdrawl
Post by: Alex on January 26, 2009, 06:46:22 PM
correct.. then what did they become?
Title: Re: Withdrawl
Post by: RAGNAR on January 26, 2009, 11:57:27 PM
I may be wrong..... but the team was begun as the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1933.

Around 1940 they became the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During the "War Years" They merged with Philidelphia and were called the Phil-Pitt Steagles. I think that was around 42 or 43.

They also merged with the Chicago Cardinals (Who now are the Arizona Cardinals) and became the Card-Pitts. This was following the merger with the Eagles around 43 or 44.

After the War they returned to what we know today as the Pittsburgh Steelers.

kinda weird how the cardinals and the Steelers started out as the same franchise and after the Rooney Family left the cardinals and the rest is histroy how the 2 franchises went the complete oposite direction and how ironically it took a former Steelers Offensive coordinator to turn them around... very cool if you ask me

Cool.... ironic.. karma... if we try to figure out the NFL we will go insane and be medicated in a straight jacket confined to a rubber room and miss the Superbowl.

Title: Re: Withdrawl

I really don't concern myself with this so much.

I wait and see the end result of who ebds up where and who has been branded with a team brand.

Then I look at potential drafts and trades.

At least it looks like Brett Favre is really retiring this time around... I, for one, hope that he doesn't pull what he did last year, as I nearly lost all respect for him, but if he does backtrack and unretire, then I will definitely have absolutely no respect for him left

RB LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers have agreed to a restructured contract that will keep the running back in San Diego next season. Yahoo! Sports reported that the new contract includes the same $6.725 million Tomlinson was due to earn next year, but restructures the final two years of the deal. His base salaries of $98 million (2010) and $9.275 (2011) will be reduced. If the teams had not been able to reach a new agreement, Tomlinson would have been released.

As RB Darren Sproles was made a Franchise Player, and has been tendered at $6.621M... This was the worry, if we kept Sproles, could we keep LT as well, due to the salary cap... The end result was we got to keep both, thanks to LT and working out his contract to help the team on the field and off...

As for other details, it has come out that Antonio Cromartie played most of the season with a fractured hip, which would explain the reasons why he seemed to be reluctant to make the hits, and was repeatedly exposed for being out of position... the team never said anything about this... He was almost traded out for Florence, as he was released by the Jaguars, but he passed on returning to the Chargers and has signed with the Buffalo Bills...

Chargers lost DE Igor Olshansky has been allowed to flee, and he has been signed to the Cowboys, to replace Chris Chanty's role...

There is nothing new to report regarding the Chargers locating a new site where to build a stadium. Chula Vista, a San Diego suburb, remains interested but a move there seems to have very traction. Meanwhile, plans to build and NFL stadium some 100 miles in the Los Angeles suburb of Industry continue. I have seen the site they want to build the stadium in Chula Vista, it's a great place, but San Diego is still hemming and hawing over the blasted thing for almost 5 years now... Only time will tell if the Chargers will stay in San Diego or go back to Los Angeles...

Though the trading and drafting season is still going... The major players we were all worried about are still here, and Merriman will be returning as well...

Pro Football Hall of Fame Game The first preseason game is on August 9, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. EDT on NBC. The Buffalo Bills will play the Tennessee Titans and both will wear "throwback" jerseys celebrating the two franchises American Football League origins. It is the first time since 1970 that the teams have not been from opposing conferences; also, both Bills owner Ralph Wilson, a 2009 Hall of Fame inductee, and Titans owner Bud Adams have owned their teams continuously since the AFL's inception in 1960, making them the longest-tenured team owners in the league. Both teams will be making their first Hall of Fame Game appearance since the 1980s ((Buffalo last played in Canton in 1989, Tennessee in 1985 as the former Houston Oilers) and I should add this game is the day before my bday... ~grins and bounces~)

NFL Kickoff Game and opening weekend The first game of the season is on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 8:35 pm EDT, with the Super Bowl XLIII champion Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Tennessee Titans at Heinz Field. The opening weekend game on NBC Sunday Night Football will feature the Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers. The opening weekend doubleheader games on Monday Night Football will both be part of the AFL 50th Anniversary celebration: Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots in the first game, and San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders in the second game.

International Series This year's game will be played October 25, 2009 at 1:00 pm EDT (5:00 pm local time in London) again at Wembley Stadium in London. The New England Patriots play the designated "home" team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. CBS will televise this game on a regional basis as the Patriots are the "visiting" team.

Thanksgiving Day games These games are on Thursday, November 26, 2009. Fox holds the rights to the 12:30 p.m. afternoon game, which will feature the Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions. Poor on-field performance and attendance have increased calls for the Lions to be replaced, particularly in 2008, but owners ultimately rebuffed these calls. The placement of the Packers, making their 19th Thanksgiving appearance against the Lions, was likely done to help the Lions Thanksgiving game garner higher ratings, with the Packers alone being one of the league's highest rating draws. The Dallas Cowboys will host the Oakland Raiders, at 4:15 p.m. EST on CBS, while the prime time NFL Network game, featuring the Denver Broncos hosting the New York Giants, is featured at 8:20 p.m. EST.

Bills Toronto Series The second regular-season game of the series, in which the Buffalo Bills play in the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, will feature the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football December 3. Earlier reports on a potential Bills-Toronto Argonauts doubleheader and reports of the league favoring other teams were proven inaccurate. No preseason game will be played in this series for 2009.

Christmas The league has scheduled a rare Friday night game on December 25, Christmas Day, in lieu of a Thursday night game that week. The game will also be part of the AFL Anniversary celebration and will feature the San Diego Chargers at the Tennessee Titans.

Pro Bowl: The 2010 Pro Bowl is on January 31, one week before Super Bowl XLIV, at the same site of the league championship game, Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This is the first time since 1979 (1978 NFL season) that the Pro Bowl will be held in the Continental United States as opposed to Hawaii. The NFL also announced that the site and date of Pro Bowl games after 2010 will include playing the game on a rotating basis in Honolulu. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the move was made after looking at alternatives to strengthen the Pro Bowl and to make the end of the season more climactic. As a result of the move, players will not be allowed to play in both the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl in the same year. In addition, ESPN will replace CBS as broadcaster, with kickoff scheduled for 8:05 pm EST.

----------------------------------------------------------------

This should bring some enjoyment in the mean time and when I get the full schedules for both preseason and regular season with times and all I will post them as well as get a ticker timer for all to see when the first football is kicked.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

edited to remove reference point I missed earlier... This is all quoted from Wikipedia and there reference point numbers like to hide... ~smirks and returns you all to your regularly scheduled withdrawl time~

It's no longer working, but the concept was interesting, but either the webmaster either was about to lose his job and decided to code konami into the ESPN.com website or was looking to be fired... Either way, as I said, it's been taken down, but here's a taste of what it was..
