Being a percussionist, I am rather fond of powerdrummers. However... that chick is not a powerdrummer. I think deep down she resents her instruments and is actually trying to see if she can batter them so hard they explode. I wounder if anyone ever bothered to tell her mics are a useful tool. They are not just decoration. She would do better at hard labor breaking boulders into gravel with a sledge than claiming to be a percussionist. The whole band is boring, unbalanced, and they look like shit. I recommend Prozac for the lead singer... anger management for the pounder... and cut the other two loose and look for some talent.

Definitely some potential in their genre... just need more work in the garage before borrowing or renting an auditorium for final tweaking before opening again in public. Small clubs and outdoor areas can make you wish to pull your hair out if you need to work magic with the sound system, but auditoriums... a whole new ballgame. If you are good and tight and well balanced... all your sound man usually has to do is run a few sound checks to make sure everything is working, and then balance volume controls essentially. Allow the natural sound to come through. They could also use some work on presence. That comes with experience. MOVE AROUND when not singing. Don't marry your asses to the mic stands. You cannot hide behind them. They are not wide enough to hide your tits.

Lose the damn music stand, lose the beer, learn what you are trying to show. As a matter of fact, lose the lead singer entirely. She should stick to singing in the shower where she can only cause pets and the neighbors to suffer. Its a small place and from what can be seen it is all hard surfaced. There are a couple things the percussionist could do to soften her sound and blend in better... but its tough. The bass needs more bottom end to give a fuller sound to the instrumentals. The axe needs to utilise more dynamics as she plays. She plays like someone who speaks in a monotone voice. Boost the riffs and breaks. Balance during vocals. Not much presence, but in their defense not much room for a show either. But lean to use what you have. When you cannot move around, use body language, facial expression, and "stationary" movements to induce mood and boost your charisma factor. A good band member can have presence even if I nailed their feet to the floor.
There are some outstanding bands out there with front women. There are outstanding bands out there that are mixed. But unfortunately as a whole... I still have to say the all female bands are not stacking up well to their counterpart all male and mixed bands. I did not post the rinkydink lamer female bands. These were some of the best I found. By the same token there are some all guy bands out there that suck beyond words. But overall... I have to go with the guys or mixed over all female.

I am not sure how many of of you love classical music, but this is an incredible video of one of the Masters of the violin, Nathan Milstein, performing the Bach Chaconne for solo violin. If you love to see perfection, and mastery of an instrument, you will be amazed. I have a transcription of the piece, written for cello, and have tried to work it up, but have been frustrated. Lazlo Varga, professor of cello at the S.F. Conservatory of Music, recorded it, and I didn't like it. The cello just isn't nimble enough to express the counterpoint. The best 'cello' interpretation I have heard was with 4 cellos playing the piece, the counterpoint was broken up between the 4 players. (I bought the music, and hope to perform it one day). I told a viola friend of what I had done, and she said that it made sense...that it took 4 cellos to make up one violin. I smacked her one...

I would like to suggest this one to you all. It is very Gorean, I have seen. It is 'Tzigane', by Ravel, performed by a gorgeous red headed violin virtuoso. (So you Men will get some lovely eye candy)
She starts out alone, playing a theme, that she develops, but that just does not jell. You can see her frustration in her eyes, and you also see her slave belly burning hot.
After a few minutes, The 'Conductor' arrives. She gets taught a very simple theme to play, and she learns it, very slowly at first.
She then turns away from the Master, and mixes her own, yearning theme with the one he taught her.
She gets drilled again by the Master, teaching her the melody that He wants her to play, and she obeys...starting from the beginning...
The end...well...it is a lovely expression of what I think a girl is to her Master. she offers Him all that she has to offer, and He takes her offering, and turns it into something that both He, and she are pleased with.
This all takes place in a slave dancing arena...

Something a bit special for me, as I never thought I would see or hear my Aunt Pat sing again. The woman on the right with the blond hair is my Aunt Pat, who used to sing regularly for her husband, my Uncle Dan, who at the end of June will have been gone from our lives for 6 years, and each year it doesn't hurt any less.

...I have one of these...can't play it nearly as well as she does. It has six strings, and is tuned like a guitar. The strings are pure gut, so they get out of tune easily. Need to tune between each piece...plus your thighs get tired...there is no end pin. You may notice that it is shaped like a double bass...because it is from the 'Bass' Family. The cello is from the 'Violin' Family. *S* I like the sound, we had a trio that played the 'viols' for a while, when we three ladies were on gear, it was a very nice sound.

...I studied this work. My Cello Professor was English, and a World Class performer. He explained to me that Elgar was very depressed in his later years, and his writings showed it. Think of "Pomp and Circomstance", (Hells Bells, ask me to spell crythansomen))when Elgar was in his 'National' mood. After WW1, Elgar became very depressed...this concerto shows it. It is very difficult to play, but it shows how the cello is so much like the human voice...especially when it rises up and shrieks with pain. My husband would come over to me at times when I was practicing, and hug me and say..."Please don't keep Pavane crying so much."

The bow hand is so different, you actually hold the hair in your hand. *S* Reminds me of the Community orchestra I played in. As Principal cello, I would hand my cello over to my seatmate, and go over to the Conductors stand...he would be off in the wings between pieces, and I would take down the score from the last piece, and set up His next score. Once, I set the score upside down...the audiance laughed as He set it upright. He glared at me, and later said..."Do that again, and you will be sitting last chair"

...Just love this piece...it was so much fun to play. Also, Holst composed music for an Abbey where orphaned girls were raised, and the Nuns taught them to play violins and other string instruments. So it makes sense that all of the performers are women. *S* Holst also wrote a 'bitch kitty'...the 'Planets'...my teacher worked hard with me to play it...I almost had it down...but at times during the performance I just lifted my bow and pretended to play...I did get better, later. *S*

...Two great performers...*S*...surprised that they sat in the sun. Cellos and violins and violas are very tempermental, and can't handle direct sunshine...it affects the laquer...and the strings. When doing wedding gigs we would always find the shade. Once we couldn't find shade near the Altar, and sat away under an Oak tree. It dropped an acorn on the second violinist violin, and we moved, and set up in the sun...we figured that an hour in the sun would not hurt our instruments too bad...The Couples wedding vows included the phase..."You make me happier than 'Extansy" A really hard drug.
They did pay us well, and we got fed...They were in the banquet room of Yosemite Lodge, after we played more, we sat outside and were given nice fillets with baked potatoes, fixings, and a couple glasses of wine

Elgar was a Nationalist Composer before..."Pomp and Circumstance"...but like many in Europe were horrified over what had happened. It was one of His last compositions.

At Conservatory, we hosted some high school kids during the summer recess, and we performed this. I looked over at the young man sitting beside me as we rehearsed, and asked him what the music meant to him. ...Debussy at his best! It is based on a French tale of a Cathedral at the bottom of the ocean that arises every 100 years for a day. You hear the bells chime, and then it begins to rise as the ocean swirls around it. Then it breaks to the surface, and after it has fully emerged, the organ plays. After the organ has finished, the Monks come out and chant, and then retire. It slowly sinks back down, the ocean gently welcomes it, and it settles back onto the sea floor. The bells chime a few more times...and then go to sleep for another 100 years.

..Two real stories about this wonderful work.
I was sitting Principal cello with a local orchestra, and the Managers had hired a wonderful violinist to perform this very difficult work. He had mastered the work, and it was a joy to rehearse with him, he was nice, not conceited. During the performance, he was sweating very heavily after the first movement. He didn't have a hanky, and he gestured to the Conductor, who also raised his hands in denial. I always had a hanky, I would drape it over the left shoulder of my cello so my hand sweat would not tarnish the cello. I handed the hanky to the Conductor, and he passed it on to the soloist. We finished the work, and the soloist gave it back to me...it was SOAKED! *S* If he was a world class performer I probably could have listed it on Ebay!
I also witnessed this when I lived in CA. Itzak was performing this work with the SF Philomarnic with Seiji Ozawa. He broke an 'A' string during the 1st movement, and quickly handed his violin off to the Concertmaster. The concertmaster passed the violin back and took other instruments, and the violin arrived at the last stand. The man had extra strings in his pocket, and he restrung the violin...tuned it...and set it back up the line. The outside violinists handed it up the line, and got their own back. It arrived at the first stand just as the cadenza arrived...and the Concertmaster held it out to Itzak. The audience started laughing...and even Ozawa had to stop to laugh.

...One of most powerful duets for female singers. It is from 'Miss Saigon', which was based on 'Madame Butterfly'. I tear up every time. Chris, a Marine, is back in the US after the Vietnam War, and had had to leave Kim, a young Vietnamese behind, although he had fathered a child with her. He married Ellen, a woman in the US...but part of him was left in Vietnam. The two women sing of their love for him, and how he is torn between both worlds. At the end of the musical, he and Ellen return to Vietnam, and Kim tries to give her child to Ellen...she is confused, and refuses. At the finale, Chris tracks Kim down, and when he also refuses to take the child...Kim shoots herself...leaving Chris with no choice.

...*S* I just love listening to singers...except they can't count...and they don't know the difference between a C-Sharp, and a D-Flat!.. ;D The Human Voice is AWESOME! I can't sing, although I can be very 'enthusiastic'. When our Music Sorority would perform vocal works, the Leader would tell me before we got on stage..."Just 'lip synch', I will do your chores for the next week." I agreed, for some reason, I was always assigned the difficult chores.
This is a performance by a Counter Tenor. It is a male voice...but it is very high...at times almost at a Mezzo Soprano. In early times, there were male singers called 'Castrati'...for obvious reasons. They had the Soprano that boys often have...but with the power of an adult when they grew up. In my Freshman year at Conservatory we all attended a Music History class. The Professor briefly discussed the 'Castrati' when we were studying that era, and commented that the 'Castrati' were very respected and well paid, and that there weren't very many of them. A girl sitting in front of me asked, "Well, if they were so well paid, why didn't more men get their vocal cords operated on?" The Professor turned bright red...I leaned forward, and tapped her shoulder, and whispered..."They didn't operate on the vocal cords...they cut their balls off." She shrieked...and the whole class whooped with laughter.
The Professor gestured to me to stay behind when he dismissed the class, and after everyone was gone, started laughing, and said..."Thank you...I REALLY didn't want to explain that"...He was a Julliard Graduate. I cracked up, too, and said..."Let me know whenever I can help out". We encountered each other several times after I graduated, we would go out for a drink or some food after a Concert or a rehearsal, and talk about the Conservatory. He would fill me in on the other professors and the management and other matters. He played the French Horn very well, and I always liked him...although he did have a horrible temper that he sometimes let loose on us. ;)

At the performance...he would urge us to play our best...and grimace if we weren't...and take us aside afterwards! ;D

The vocal Professor, after hearing me sing, told me that He would give me a "B' in the chorus class if I just left and practiced the cello part during class. :o So...there went my 'Perfect 4.0' because I sang like a wounded sleen. :-X

Abba has been a huge part of my life, starting back in pre-teen years, when I was teased for liking them, thru all of life's twists and turn and aging.
