Pre-Migration Log
« on: October 22, 2008, 05:23:39 AM »
Entry 1

RAGNAR

The last two days it has snowed in scattered flurries with last night developing into actual snow. Just before sunrise the snow ceased though the winds remain stronger than usual. Ground accumulation of snow is only about three fingers deep. The stock are not having any problems rooting up grasses and continue to graze well enough.

The snows have come early this year and I must wonder if they will remain, or if we shall have a respite of warm weather before the season actually settles in.

As I walked through the camp during the night I was pleased to see many have hung their traces and harnesses off their wagon railings making ready to harness up the teams when the time comes. Many have already checked their yokes and have placed them stacked on furs beneath the wagon and covered them.

Word has reached me that the bosk herds have been moving about more than usual and this may be a sign they intend to move soon.

Outriders should begin cutting out the team bosk and keeping them separate from the herds.

Any slaves not yet branded or ringed should be seen to as soon as possible.

I am pleased that my own wagon is ready to roll save for hitching up the bosk.

I shall have to make sure my Cobbler wagon is open a few more nights before closing for the migration. I have placed numerous pairs of older used boots in the bins along the wagon's platform for slaves to pick from should they still need boots. I would recommend everyone have at least two pair for migration. I hope the other Clans will follow suit and be open a few more nights as well.

Word has reached me we are the last of the Wagon Peoples to move out. Kassar pulled out the night before last and are on their way.

Scout Report

Entry 1

I have not heard back from the last runner that I sent a report with, and this has been unnerving to me.  Five days has past and I should have seen the lone warrior by now.  This report I am sending by air, as my kite Tiuri can reach camp faster and give news of what may be coming towards Tuchuk.

I have traveled farther south and out of Tuchuk lands to gauge how the winter might find us.  I have not seen any good signs.  Along the Thassa, the wind chill has dropped the temperature far enough to produce ice on outcropping of rocks along the cliffs.  The Skies have been downcast and I have not seen the sun to warm my face for the passing of 8 days.  An early winter does not bode well for Tuchuk from what I have experienced out here.

I am sending an Or of my men back on the morrow as three of them were not prepared for these temperatures due to their youth and need to prove themselves “men”, and two others have already run out of rations.  Suffice it to say, that was their folly.

True, I smell warm rain in the air and this light coat of snow on the ground here will be cause for concern if it does rain and temperatures drop later.  Jagged iced mud is a potential threat, especially for our wagon wheels.

The winds are blowing off the seas and towards Tuchuk.  That will leave quite a bit of moisture in the air from here towards the Cartius.  The boskhide on the wheels will have to be carefully watched and maintained if this rain and cold happens.

I will report more in two days time.

Also, allow Amber to know she is never far from my thoughts though I might be far from home.

Scout Report

Entry 2

True, I have sent the last Or of my men that were with me further North back towards camp.  They have exhausted their rations and the temperature has dropped severely.  I am sending this by Tora my other kite because the message will reach you faster than the Or will.

The overcast cloud cover broke yesterday and it has been clear, but you can feel the chill deep in the bones.  There was a light rain before the Skies cleared and we have experienced an ice over on the ground.  Hopefully, the light drizzle dries up before reaching Tuchuk.

No further sign of dangers, just cold.  I have perhaps one more day before I will be forced to return to camp.  It looks bleak and this early chill only causes me worry for what lies ahead of us.  We will have to make sure we have enough feed for our other livestock just in case as this sudden chill had killed the grazing this far south and if the same patterns of weather here affect Tuchuk, then the bosk will need to move soon as this was sudden.

I hope this report finds Tuchuk in better climate.

ENTRY 2

RAGNAR

All of my True's units have returned except for one Man missing. I expect my True to return anytime now.

The team bosk have been cut out and brought into camp and are on the wagon lots by the wagons they will pull. Even with the snow and rain they are able to graze enoughfor their needs. The grain supply for the vulo is growing low.

Two bosk have been left to the Butchers Clan for the main camp's use.

The other herds have formed up and though they have not yet begun to move, they are growing increasingly wrestless. I think they will move soon.

All seems ready to go now save for taking down the pens, our standard, and packing the commissary. The pens and standard will be seen to as soon as word comes the herds are moving and we harness our teams. The commissary may be packed before that time depending on my evaluation and assessment of the situation.

All slaves and team bosk not yet branded must be branded as soon as possible. Nose rings will also be put in place. The only exceptions to this will be those taken from the ship when we went to the beach. They will be seen to at a later time.

ENTRY 3

RAGNAR

Returned from patrol and got some sleep before logging the report.

Heavy rains came and managed to melt away the snow that had accumulated. Unfortunately a drop in temperature has frozen the rainfall and snow has come to accumulate overtop of it.

The herd has formed up and they are starting their move northward at a slow meandering pace. The wagons shall follow in a day or so when we have managed to overcome the snow and ice.

All stock in the camp will need to be fed the grasses beneath the wagons that escaped the iceover and supplemented with grains.

The main commissary will be packed and made ready save for the usual kettles of water boiling by the fires.

Two slaves will stay within the cooling wagon with a small brazier allowing only enough heat within to prevent freezing. These slaves will be rotated on shifts per Coordinator instructions.

Keep a close eye on all water barrels and casks outside of the wagons and break any ice that forms or the containers will rupture.

Two full Oralu have been dispatched to guard the herd as it moves. Supply wagons accompany them with standard field rations.

The main fire will continue to burn until we move out. However, the Ubar's wagon has been opened to allow congregating within its main area. The commissary within the wagon may be used.

As of this entry my True Raziel has not yet returned from his patrol. I am starting to become concerned, but not overly so as his punctuality is normally less than stellar when riding alone. If he located rum... we may not even see him until we return for the summering if the run holds out.

I expect this migration to be extremely taxing on Tuchuk.

Now for me it is time for hot food and some additional sleep in warm furs to rid myself of this deep chill.

Entry 4

RAGNAR

My True Raziel has returned to camp. He has lost his mount and it seems a few chunks of flesh to sleen. I wait for a more detailed report as soon as possible.

Snow continues to fall, and it is now above my ankles and approaching shin deep.

If at all possible, we shall have to move out come the morrow and head for Turia. We do not have the necessary supplies to sustain a grassless stay in camp at this time.

I pray to Endless Sky all goes well and for victory over our enemies.

End Report.
