Migration Log (Winter 2016)
« on: November 11, 2016, 10:36:53 PM »
Entry One

The main area has begun moving. Thus far there have been no mishaps and all has gone as soothly as expected.

The weather is not cooperation, as there is snow upon the ground with wind and additional accumulation.

As always, the camp unwinds from the inside out, and will continue to do so through the night. With luck, come morning, the wagons will be circled around the entire perimeter of the empty camp and the teams will be resting in place. Then... the lead wagon will head for Turia forming up into migration formation in the process.

Migration has begun.

Entry Two

Encirclement of the camp was completed as planned. The Ubara gained a wagon and stock. I will allow her to give the details if she chooses.

The migration column was formed as the wagons pulled away from encircling the empty campsite, changing from single file to twenty wagons abreast and continuing until all have formed up.

The wind and cold continued throughout the day with additional snow flurries which continued until evening. Snow accumulation is roughly eight to ten fingers deep.

Despite the weather, good time and distance was made and the column has stopped for the night in the Wilds.

Tend the stock well, build no outside fires. Rest and be ready to move at first light.

The column moved at dawn.

Good distance was covered.

Wind and cold continued but snow flurries remain absent.

The column has stopped and will again move at first light.

No known incidents to report.

Entry Four

Morale is still high. The wagons are making good time given the weather front. It remains cold and windy, though the day passed without additional snow until the waining ahns of light. Hopefully it will cease. If not, I expect measurable additional accumulation by the morn.

Bochida's 8th relieved us on the advanced point allowing The 1st to return to the column. It was greatly appreciated to find hot water, brazier burning, and food ready for us. The soap was especially appreciated fter being on point since beginning our march. A few of these Men can become extremely ripe even in the cold.

The wagons seem in good shape, just take care to observe daily maintenance.

Grasses will be made available for the teams to supplement what the snow is taking from them. The Salt Hunters and Butchers have begun releasing some stores for those in need. Take what you need but use all you take.

I hope to see Turia by days end on the morrow. It will feel good to take in a hot bath, put on clean clothes, and enjoy what Turia offers.

Entry Five

The weather is not being kind. The flurries turned to slushy rain accompanied by thunder and wind before the temperature dropped and gave up wet heavy snow. It is important to keep the wagons cleared of the snow as it is unnecessary weight. The braziers are enough to keep the domes clear of inhabited wagons, but pay strict attention to uninhabited wagons such as the freighters and temporarily vacant Clan wagons.

The column did not make the ground we have the past few days due to weather conditions.  The column is halted again for the night with wheelboards down to prevent wheels sinking into the earth. Each wagon will keep one small lamp lit as marker lights on the right rear corner so Units can still move bout freely regardless of weather conditions.

A Kassar Woman is traveling with us. Temptation is what she is called. She has been positioned behind Sidona's wagon for the march.

Dried grasses have been put down for the teams to graze upon during the night. The dung supply is still in good shape. Take what you need but use what you take.

The Butcher Clan has meat available under the same condition as the dung. Take what you need but use what you take.

The 1st Oralu will be heading back out to ride ahead of the point Oralu before daybreak, so we will be in position when the column moves out again.

The column will cross a small river on our next leg, and I expect it to slow the march. Ice may have to be cleared from the stock and the wheels after the crossing, so expect it.

There are grumblings about the weather, but overall morale is still high.

Each step taken is a step closer to our destination!

I hate reports.

The 1st left during the night to move well ahead of the column.

I hate reports.

A good amount of snow accumulated during the night leavin us with a good foot of snow.

I hate reports.

The column was unable to maintain its usual pace, and did not manage the river crossing before dark. With luck we will cross at dawn and continue on our way.

I hate reports.

Eat and rest up. Check the stock well especially hooves and paws.

I hate reports.

Be ready to move as soon as light enough to manage it.

Did I mention I hate reports?

A later start than expected due to tending the stock and harnesses held up the column. The small river crossing was made without any reported incidents.

The column was forced to stop and remove ice from the legs, hooves, and paws of the stock as well as wheels, axles, etc before damage was caused.

Grease the axles before moving out and put down feed for the teams. Food is available from the butcher clans for the carnivorous stock.

Get hot food and warm rest. It will be needed. Though there is about a foot of snow accumulated, if good time is made Turia is within reach for resupply and simple pleasures.

It has been reported Orluman Tabin is not doing well in the med wagon. See attached Healers report for further information.

Tuchuk has reached Turia and is in the migration encampment just beyond a secondary gate where we usually go.  The column made very good time covering a great deal of ground.

Tend all stock and check all the tack and gear. Make note of any repairs requiring attention so when we enter the City they may be taken care of.

Spit bosk for roasting and eat well.

Tuchuk will enter the city come the morn, after everything is explained outside the gate and markers for services are handed out.

Well done Tuchuk!!!

We have entered Turia.

at one of the secondary gates
says to ALL

: "The majority of you know the drill. Upon entry, stop at the table and get a cord of small metal disks. Stamped upon each is a service they can be redeemed for. Goods... services... food... drink... accommodations... etc. They are NOT redeemable by you for coin. They are good for services and such. Markers, if you will. Those of the main area have rooms awaiting them at the Inn. This includes Guests and Honored Guests. There are baths available there, and a meal per day per occupant."

| | | | | | | | | | RAGNAR | | | | | | | | | |

at one of the secondary gates
says to ALL

: "It is paramount we secure supplies as quickly as possible. Do so after settling in and getting comfortably cleaned up. Once the work is done, enjoy your stay. I do not intend to be here long as I am hoping to be gone before the other Wagon Peoples arrive. If it does not work out that way, try to avoid confrontation within the walls. OUTSIDE the walls, use your own discretion."

| | | | | | | | | | RAGNAR | | | | | | | | | |

at one of the secondary gates
says to ALL

: "Tuchuk is gifting every slave, with personal Owner's permission, one silver to spend for whatever comforts and frivolous items wished. Many slaves have additional coin gathered from dance and service. If any free of Tuchuk is short of coin, especially Clan Elders, loans will be available from any Council Member from camp funds. All loans must be repaid before we begin the migration back to our summering lands."

Those of the main area of camp have rooms at the Inn.

Any in need of coin, individuals as well as Clan Elders may secure a loan from any Council Member. These loans are without interest and are due before we begin our migration back to our summering lands.

Assist those new to our home as well as those who have recently returned. Show them the ropes of how to barter and trade, where to locate what they may need, where to find the best food and drink among other things.

Oraluman Cassius and Warriors are stationed just outside the secondary gate where our encampment is. Services disks may be obtained there as well as smaller loans. For larger loans you will have to contact a Council member.

Shop and resupply wisely. Do remember many items can be obtained from our own camp Clans.

Do indulge in the various foods not normally found within our home. Many food items are of the common variety, so none need go hungry if the dietary offerings are not to your tastes.

Bathing, laundry, food, drink, even services of the flesh are available. Take in a performance at the amphitheater. There are always things to see in the Ar of the South.

We are the first of the Wagon Peoples to arrive, so the numerous Merchants and Vendors may be quite willing to kick off their sales with good deals. Most... but not all... are willing to haggle over prices and quantities. One can aften secure a much better price when dealing in bulk. It is not a bad idea to partner up with other Tuchuks and each secure goods in quantity and divide them up among yourselves.

Upon initial inspection, Turia seems well stocked, though caravans of additional goods are expected to arrive soon. Keep your eyes and ears open for word on the streets. Merchants are usually willing to give better prices to move their inventory out if new shipments are soon to arrive. It cuts down on their storage and warehouse costs.

DO keep an eye on your valuables. There are many Peoples in Turia at this time. Some are not exactly of the most upstanding of natures and habits. Some hold honor as high as any. Thus far Karians, Taharians, Torvaldslanders, Arians, and assorted Mercenary types have been seen along with our Tuchuk and Turians. Be wary of the Mercenary types. Many of them take work where they can find it, often as escorts for caravans, personal guards, or they may be available for employment. Profit vs risk is what concerns then... not what must be done to collect.

Enjoy what Turia has to offer. Shop smart, stay alert, and all should be well. Do not hesitate to ask a brother for assistance or for an escort if you have any doubts.

The column moved on leaving Turia about midday after finishing up stocking supplies, securing loads, and enjoying a few final foods and drinks Turia has to offer.

Outside the walls the temperature dropped amid winter winds.

Despite weather conditions, the extended rest, good feed, and additional attention to the stock and wagons assisted in making better time than I had hoped for. All seems to have gone well even though Kassar had arrived in Turia during our last night but were held outside the gates until we were on our way to avoid potential additional violence in the streets.

As yet there are no reports on the other two Wagon Peoples.

Along our migration route, the column came upon a Kassar killed by our Scouts. The Rider was most likely observing our course and movements in order to report back. If not, better he than any of us. The Warriors riding rear guard stripped the corpse of all valuable and took his mount. His lance was thrust into the ground and his helmet placed atop it to mark his location for his own people to pick up. As cold as it is, there is no chance of rotting or bloating due to the cold.

The column stopped for the night to tend the stock, check the wagons and tack, and to get hot food in our bellies. No outside fires. Maintain blackout as much as possible and assist those Warriors on watch with whatever hot food you might spare, or at least some hot water. They do have field rations, but they are less than appetizing after the dining in Turia. Some of them may have additional food items in their saddlebags they would be willing to contribute to a meal if they might share that meal.

Dragonslair will have hot water available throughout the night as well as simple but filling stew.

Begin preparing to move after an early morning meal. The strength gained from the nourishment will be needed. We will attempt to navigate ice come daylight.

Dried grasses were put down for the bosk for the night.

Keep the braziers going through the night but allow them to burn down to embers before we move out. It makes getting them going again much quicker.

The icy fields were crossed with some casualties. Two deaths within the column;

Chanar... 7th Or, 3rd Orlu, 1st Oralu, retired.

Kipchak... 1st Oralu, retired. Ubara's Own.

One death in the rear Guard;

Arin... Orluman Arin, 2nd Orlu, 3rd Askari Oralu.

Several wagons damaged but none lost. All have been repaired well enough they should be able to complete the journey.

The column halted beyond the icy fields and made camp for the night. Hot food is a must as the temperature began falling as a weather front moved in. Blizzard conditions quickly arose and rear corner lamps were ordered lit and guy lines were strung through the main routes of the column.

Any hot food or hot water for those standing the night watch is greatly appreciated. Any NOT of the watch should not venture out unless an emergency exists. Visibility will be next to nothing until the worst of the weather moves through.

Snow is accumulating quickly, and it is advised to keep the interior firebowls burning through the night not only for comfort, but to help keep the wagon domes clear of snow buildup.

Several herd bosk were injured on the ice beyond saving and were turned over to the Butchers Clan for processing. Any in need of good fresh meat should contact Mariposa or her Clan to arrange it. Any meat not issued will be entrusted to those who will use it to provide hot food for those on watch in the coming nights.

The Scouts of The 1st returned to the column for hot food and some rest. I will accept their report when they awaken as immediate report in brief held nothing of any dangers we can control.

Be certain to check the stock closely. Check hooves and paws and look for rubs or abrasions from tack and yokes.

Keep regular checks of your water barrels. They are freezing and will burst if the ice is not regularly broken up.

Maintain the usual cold weather general instructions and be smart regarding threats caused by the cold.

Anyone suffering issues with fingers, toes, noses, ears, etc that are a result of the cold report to a Healer for instructions and/or treatment.

It is my hope to move out as soon as visibility improves and light enough to advance.

Due to the blizzard conditions and extremely low visibility the column was forced to remain in place.

The stock was well tended, and minimal exterior chores were done except for tending the stock, breaking the forming ice in the water barrels, and clearing away accumulating snow on the wagon walkways.

Eat well, rest, and be prepared to move out if the snow has ceased come morn.

Remember to help the Watch as much as possible.

The blizzard conditions yielded to simple flurries. Though leaving two to three foot deep drifts and accumulation in its wake, the ground beneath is solid. The snow is powdery so the going is not too bad provided a steady pace can be maintained. The column was delayed in moving out in order to allow the weather to further clear, and to clear the snow from the wagons and give good attention to the teams.

Once moving, it was as I expected. The ground covered broke no speed records, but good steady progress was gained.

It still remains bitterly cold due primarily to the wind chill factor. If not for the wind, the overall conditions might seem tolerable. At any rate, there is no choice in the matter. The column moves on.

The column traveled until shortly before losing the light, and has halted at the base of an incline leading to higher ground for a time. The teams needed rest before attempting to pull the wagons upward. The ground is exceedingly steep, but it is long. It will require much stamina from the teams.

The Scouts are out being the well forward eyes of Tuchuk, followed by The 1st AO, whom I join shortly, to secure the route ahead. Kassar is behind us arriving in Turia as we were preparing to leave, but the other two Wagon Peoples are not yet accounted for. This does warrant consideration. I like to think we again have the lead to our wintering lands, but I am unable to assume anything.

The herd feeds on bundles of broken dried grasses and the teams were ordered to receive a good grain feeding while halted. They should be well fed and rested by the time the column moves. The kaiila grow hungry and need to feed. They are growing increasingly ill mannered. Until they can hunt, do what can be done to satisfy their hunger. The Butcher Clan can assist with the innards and scraps of their work, most have a good number of verr in stock this season. None will fill their belly, but all should get something.

The night Watch has gone on half watches do to conditions. More Warriors will be used, but spend half the amount of time in the elements.

Dung carts are moving through the column distributing stores to any in need. Barring mishap, there should be no need to ration, but do not use it wastefully.

Hot food and rest when all else has been seen to. Red meat is available. Bosk from the herd have been cut out for Butchering so none should go hungry. It was a good year for the bosk.

We were not able to secure as much fruit in Turia as we like, or normally do. All should get a ration as it has something to do with benefiting health. I do not know why, I just know it does.

Be ready to move out when the command is given around first light. Make certain all now is cleared off the wagons before attempting the high ground. The extra weight will only make it harder. Continue breaking up the ice in the water barrels. By now it is all mostly broken chunks of ice. Use it. We are not far from the next water source. It will also help lighten the loads.

Morale seems good and if it remains so, Tuchuk will be all the better for it. Accidents and casualties have been minimal thus far.

Cold cold and cold with winds and cold.

The column covered the slope and sits on the high ground exposed to more wind and more windchill, but the wind has blown the snow clear enough for the bosk to graze.

Keep warm, eat well, and tend the stock.

Be ready to move again come daylight.

I hate reports!!!!!

It is cold. VERY cold, mighty cold and the wind makes it colder!!!!!

I hate reports.

The 2nd Orlu of The 1st under Orluman Raiden returned to the column with four freighters believed to be the overdue caravan bound for Turia. One Teamster frozen to the lead wagon, no stock, eight frozen in the fourth wagon and twenty on its walkway found in varied positions. Appeared they ran into team issues and were halted, caught in the weather and had run out of fuel for the braziers. Some wood was in the braziers charred from crates and shipping containers, but why they froze is unknown. No visible wounds are immediately apparent on the corpses. It seems we will drag them along until they thaw enough for examination by Healers before disposal.

The freighters contained frozen produce, which when thawed can be fed to our tarsk. Other luxuries were noted, such as tapestries, furs, rugs, and other such items. Time will tell what closer inventorying will divulge. Bosk have been harnessed and yoked to bring them with us. If nothing else, we have gained four freight wagons.

I hate reports.

Raiden's Orlu had a brief time to get some hot food and warm before rejoining the Oralu riding point before the column moved out again.

I hate reports.

The column is rolling through the night to make up ground and get into warmer weather sooner.

I hate reports.
