WHo'd have thunk it??!
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:33:32 PM »
We got to experience a blinkin EARTHQUAKE last night/early this morning.  :o

I woke up to my bedroom door rattling like heck at about 5:30am this morning... and suddenly realized that my bed was vibrating too... it took about 30 seconds for the door to stop shaking, but another minute or so before my bed stopped.

Apparently there was an earthquake by West Salem Illinois, which is 200 miles away from me, but the whole area felt it really well. Earthquake registered 5.2 and so far for ALL areas, no major damage or injury has been reported... altho Chicago apparently had falling bricks and broken windows.

very weird...

That was 4:30 this morning for us.  Fun fun...and then another Earthquake hit about 10:15 this morning.  Nothing was wrong here.  It was just odd to wake up to being shook for no apparent reason, especially when you turn to your husband and say "I think that was an earthquake" and he says "Illinois doesn't have earthquakes".  Heh.  Earthquakes.  Fun.

indeed.. earthqakes do occur in middle america..
one the largest in post Europen contact was in
1811 and 1812 ( several events) in New Madrid, Missouri
which destroyed the town.. i belive that it was 7.2

..you can not grasp it.
You can  only touch the  fire and be seared by it,  even destroyed  in it's embrace, but never can you hold it, not for a heartbeat.

There were three New Madrid earthquakes over two or three months in the winter of 1811/1812.  The third was powerfull enought that it not only changed the course of teh Mississippi but also made the river flow backwards and it even rang church bells in Boston. I beleave a lake in Tenn. was also formed by the quake when the land level fell.
