Mineral, VA 5.8 earthquake
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:23:36 PM »
That was insane, just a few cracks in the ceiling here at the house and we were the only ones home at the time. We were up most of the night following Hurricane Irene, who looks like she might make a visit here in Delaware, so both Ray and I were sound asleep. I thought it was part of my dream, then I semi-woke up with the bed moving, creaking sounds around us and me hitting Ray asking if it was an earthquake, thought we were in California for a brief moment or two, then woke up with a start and tried to get off the bed to get to the doorway.

Of course, everyone is freaking out here, wondering what blew up or exploded, no thoughts to an earthquake until a few more seconds into it. Am curious though, who else felt the shaking this afternoon when this earthquake hit, as they are saying it was felt as far north as Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard, as far south as South Carolina, all the way to Ohio to the west and apparently it was felt up in Toronto, Canada. Due to the way the land is out here on the east/mid-atlantic coast, many more will feel it, than most would if this happened in California, Nevada, or Alaska. They explained it a little bit on Fox News and The Weather Channel, but for the life of me I can not remember what they said, as I was more interested in other things like the shift in Hurricane Irene.

We are safe and sound, but now the waiting game for where Irene is going to hit is our next biggest worry, looks like we might have to get our emergency hurricane kit filled earlier than we expected. -look bewildered for a moment before heading out to the store and get stocked up on at least water and batteries-

Been thinking of you and yours True. Not to mention anyone else who lives out on the coastline.

The earthquake was felt up where I live. It lasted a good 2 mins before finally settling down. On the 10th floor of an apt building and being an 'earthquake virgin'....I was pissed off and scared at the same time.

Hang in there. Everything will turn out alright. I'm sure of it.

Didn't feel a thing in Borden, and we're not far outside Toronto.

water for two people for minimal of 7 days,  canned food or food that does not require refridgeration of any form enough for each person for 7 days. army surplus stores and hunters supply stores do carry MRE style food.  split one between two people theres enough calories to support two people off one mre. batteries for flashlight.   batteries for a radio.  masking or painters tape for windows if you are not boarding up. bread and peanut butter.  plastic bags to seal up important papers and place inside ziplock bags that don't leak.  fuel your vehichle and make sure has full tank.  prior to storms arrival fill your tub with water  and leave full. if the towns pumping stations lose power you can boil for drinking and use for flushing. perisables need to go to a cooler you can fill with ice.. but remember ice may run out if you are without power several days.  medication all in correctly labled bottles in zip lock bag and placed with valuable papers together.

I'm a hurricane camille baby.  anything that went in the mississippi gulf coast  from 66 to 86 i got to see and participate with.  from 86 to 94 anything that came up teh east sea board.  please do not wait to get what is needed if you are going to ride this out and not evacuate.
Never Meddle in the Affairs of a Dragon.  for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Got our supplies this evening, did a run to our local Walmart. Seems everyone is stocking up on gallon jugs of water, we got a 24 pack of water, since neither of us really drink water, we are looking at using it for other things such as washing up with, sanitation and other things. Got a LED lantern to add to our collection and that was the last one in the store. Ray has his MP3/FM player so that is covered, along with 16 packs of AA & AAA batteries. Nearly a full tank of gas, as we might be evacuated, though we have no clue where we are going to go, still waiting to hear from our landlord who hasn't answered our texts or calls to her cell, as we want to know if she wants us to get plywood for the windows and tape up the doors that are not used in the house and some other things that need to be taken care of if we are evacuated.

As I told Salem tonight, yesterday we had an earthquake that was the strongest since 1944 and now we are looking at a storm that is looking to be on par or worse than the 1944 Great Long Island Hurricane, or whatever it was called. I will try to post updates when we can during and after the hurricane goes through here, during all hours we are awake, we are tuned in to The Weather Channel to keep up to date on where this bitch Irene is heading. To say I am worried is an understatement, I am scared to death and if she does end up tracking more to the west, then we will be in freak out mode. At least we have the means to get out of the state and into an area of safety, if this had happened last year, we would have been fooked.

Anyway, I am going to head out, we are going to take a couple of hours out of watching the weather to watch Priest on Blu-Ray, which we bought last weekend and have been wanting to watch since we bought it, but things got in the way of that happening. Hopefully after it is over, we will be able to get some much needed sleep.

Take care my family and to those who are also in the path of this Hurricane, keep yourselves safe!
