...The Russians really know how to write music. This movement is about 'death'. I once sat with a relative...and held her hand...and watched the light in her eyes turn off. I am sure that many of you have done the same. This music expresses what the person, who's hand you are holding...must be feeling. She realizes what is happening...and tries to fight it...she makes a huge effort to stay alive...and then just moves on. The cellos settle her down...trading phrases...and then the heartbeat stops.
I was always exhausted after we finished this...and so was the audience. There would be a LONG pause before they gave us a standing ovation.
