...When I lived in the foothills of CA, on 5 acres, I fed the feral cats in order to keep squirrels and gophers away. I would put a bowl of water and a bowl of dry cat food just outside the back door, on the patio, and they would help themselves. I tried to make friends with them, but they would run away if I opened the door.

There were also ravens around, and a pair discovered the bowl of 'chow'...and decided that they liked it...and would help themselves.

After a few months, there were 4 ravens hanging around...I guess that the parents brought their adult children to my house, and said..."Here's the grub". I had to fill the food bowl more often.

A few months later, a 5th raven joined the group.
Once, I looked out the kitchen window, and all 5 of them were sitting on our rail fence...about 10 yards from the window...and all were STARING at me!!!

I opened the door, and one yelled at me. I looked down at the food bowl...and it was empty!

I looked over at them, and said..."Sorry, I will fill it." Another raven yelled at me. I went into the garage, and filled the bowl, and set it outside the kitchen door, and apologized again. Two yelled at me, and I closed the door. I watched out the kitchen window, and all 5 quickly flew over, and started eating and drinking water.
Ravens make the most amazing sounds, in addition to cawing. They 'clack'...it sounds like a percussion instrument. First time I heard it, I couldn't figure out what it was.
They are truly magnificent birds. Good thing that I am not superstitious, seeing 5 ravens...all staring at you...is considered a bad omen by some people...I hear.
