Old Gor, New Gor, bladdy bladdy phooey.
« on: March 07, 2006, 11:00:15 AM »
i hear a great deal of discussion regarding old Gor and new Gor.... rp  and sp... yadda yadda yadda.

old Gor is gone, new Gor sucks, rp is gameboard and soul play is in... blah blah blah.

in my opinion all that is a sack of dung that never dries.

what old Gor means to me... is naught the horses some used.... naught the pet wolves or larls... the chainmail, sword swinging babes, the old language, etc.... what old Gor means to me is the ideals, principles, and yearning for exploration. exploration of Gor in its entirety. naught just individual aspects as it pertains to the individual, but the search for overall knowledge and the practise of the Gorean mindset as a whole.

Gor never focused only upon combat. combat is useless if there exists nothing worthy of a Warrior fighting for.

Mastery is useless without the existence of aspects to assert Mastery over.

what is slavery without the existence of servitude and subservience to something masterful or dominant?

what makes Gor online what it should be? is it rules regarding rp? is it a correct order of pulldowns or a set number of posts to pass through an area? is it an all consuming urge to be an egomaniac feeling one is the greatest with a cybersword bragging incessantly? is it a girl who seems to be able to type beautifully in a dance... or is it the girl who types with just enough flair to show her true belly? is it a Panther toting weapons living on the wild side or is it a simple yet proud Wagon Woman tending a cookfire?

is it the beauty of a flower or the clouds moving across endless sky... the grandeur of the bosk on the plains... the billowed sails of a ship on the Thassa?

the list can go on and on without any seeming end of what Gor once was as a whole, what it is, or even what it may become.

but to me... old Gor is the semblance of all we learn and place together in order to understand the world we live in. how much more we have yet to discover regarding both our world as well as ourselves. it is the realization that even though some of us have accumulated vast knowledge, it is naught even a slight scratch on the surface of what is yet to be discovered.

old Gor was the pursuit of what Gor was meant to be... with enjoyable and colorful rp added for a sense of adventure and laughs. the chars we use meant something to us and each tended to be "real" in regards to our own person. it is what our inner selves were and may still be in some cases. it was naught a game to win or lose in the strictest sense, where if you were killed at 10PM you started over again by 11PM. if your char died it was felt as an actual loss. a part of you perished. one took the good with the bad and lived through their character the best they could regardless of what twists and turns your rp life took.

naturally i speak in terms of generalism.... as there is always some who do seek only their own gains or gratification through self serving means... butoverall "old Gor" had a flavor all it's own, a new and unique each day as it was the day before.

perhaps the drive to accept the books as the beginning and end of it all.... a script to be followed as the grand Gorean Bible... was the beginning of changes that instead of drawing us deeper into the true understanding of Gor forced us into a ruled and regulated state which robbed us of that same interesting discovery and imaginative rp classroom of learning and drove Gor deeper into a ruled game where the importance of enjoyable rp and exploration took a backseat to ooc vendettas... gameboard rp... egomania... etc.

i feel it is still very possible, as well as probable to take a step back and allow ourselves to use the knowledge obtained from the books... and mesh it with the old Gor enjoyment in order to establish naught an old Gor nor even this new Gor... but rather a Gor where all can find their footing and receive something in return for their participation in something that is greater than only one aspect of Gor, or an individual.

just a short and in some ways a vague view... but others may feel free to add their own opinions to flesh out my own views or even state their own.

who knows.... something good may come of this...

Amazingly well thought out and well put. Made quite a few good points to think about. When I first came it was towards the end of the old gor, when my maze membership ran out and the way things were going, I decided to let my character die, it was a tough descion, with no fanfare, dont even think I posted the board. Im not much of a poster. He died, and the few that new him, perhaps even missed him knew he was gone. As you said, we all SHARE gor, but yet it is not the SAME for everyone, it is a feeling. That is what makes returning so hard, finding a sense of belonging, feeling the pull towards the plains, but missing some people and finding it hard to start all over. Knowing what makes gor enjoyable, yet wondering if its still there, where it is hidden...
I wish you well, and thank you for your food for thought

Wow Bro, bladdy bladdy phooey.. * crinkles Ma nose and smiles*...

I could sit and write forever on what old gor is, but instead I choose to shows quotes from the Maker of Gor, JN...

Goreans are not stupid. It is difficult to fool them more than once. They tend to remember... there would always be the dupes, of one sort or another, and the opportunists, and the cowards, with their rationalizations. But, too, I speculated, there would be those of Ar to whom the Home Stone was a Home Stone, and not a mere rock, not a piece of meaningless earth.

A last observation having to do with the tendency of some Goreans to accept illusions and such as reality is that the Gorean tends to take such things as honor and truth very seriously. Given his culture and background, his values, he is often easier to impose upon than would be many others.

Culture decides what is truth, but truth, unfortunately, is unaware of this. Cultures, mad and blind, can die upon the rocks of truth. Why can truth not be the foundation of culture, rather than its nemesis? Can one not build upon the stone cliffs of reality rather than dash one's head against them?

The meaning of history lies not in the future but in the moment. It is never anywhere but within our grasp. And if the history of man, terminated, should turn out to have been but a brief flicker in the midst of unnoticing oblivions let it at least have been worthy of the moment in which it burned. But perhaps it would prove to be a spark which would, in time, illuminate a universe.

The Gorean believes in harmony between all that lives as well as balance in the application of the survival of the fittest laws.  He respects all men and all creatures other than men as having their role in the delicate equilibrium of life.  The Gorean warrior holds his enemy in utmost respect; the hunter applies himself to learn the ways of the animals he hunts because he acknowledges their skill at fleeing him.  In all that surrounds him, the Gorean finds beauty, value and purpose.

~smiles alil~

It doesnt matter if You live near the gleaming Thassa, the purple hues of the Volati, the snow caps of the North, the vastness of the Plains, the wonderous green hues of the forest. Simply be true to what gor is.

I recall saying this a very long time ago and you attacked Me for it.
I weant to great lengths trying to do something about it and you insulted me.
oh and now its YOUR idea?
you are Pathetic, and one of the MAIN reasons why gor is what it is today
and not what it used to be.

Hey tard, this board has a spell check.
you don't even get bonus points for trying at insults either.
and the nerve to even try to lay blame on a singular Man?
narrow minded if you ask Me, you can not blame one person.
most of the people of MTC could care less as to what goes on outside our home.
do not blame Him, blame others.

The last I checked, dualling as a free man and a slave wasn't high on the list of methods for reclaiming the spirit of Gor.  In case you missed the sarcasm, I'm talking about you.

By the way, my own Gorean spirit is alive and well, thank-you.  I didn't need your help with it then, especially not when the "man" to whom - I - was supposed to kneel was also the kajirus twitching his ass in and out of the commissary alongside me.  Or would have been, if you'd lasted long enough.  I don't want your advice now, since I think you're a parasite and a retard.  And I generally don't care about the views of the rest of Gor as a whole, because I'm too busy living and breathing my own Gorean air to sample theirs.

I kinda have that whole "Amry of One" philosophy which states that when you clean up your own back yard, maybe others will take a look at the piles of shit on their lawn and do the same.  I can't change others, I can only monitor myself and set a good example.

So how 'bout you go do the same?

And if you want to reply to me, try for tomorrow, so that I don't forget six months from now who the hell your pathetic self actually is.

ya...good on You ....Ubar....You, and those like You...Have killed Gor...look around...its empty, when it used to be full... Rooms are void of members, when there used to be many. You are entittled to your opinion, but even you...must look around and see the change. And you still think you are right?. You criticized Me.. When I fought against You and this ~change~ in views of gor...well I hope you are enjoying the emptiness you helped to create

banik -
I don't know if you are confusing your post and exactly what you are saying cause sometimes you post as your slave character and sometimes you are posting as your Master type character. However, You are in this post accusing Ragnar of being the "ONE" man to distroy Gor. In another post that you made upon the Announcements for all of WM which I have moved to the Gor board since it is a Gor topic and not an announcement you claimed.
And I havnt been here for over a yr so dont try and blame me, as if one person could destroy it all, but some would try and say so.

Please decide which argument you are going to be using for why you feel Gor is Dead before again starting to spam our boards with your condensending views.

Thanks,
ameeshia

Everyone reading this thread for the orriginal discussion intdented but needed to reply to banik since he is again spamming. I appoligize for interupting your original topic. Seems topic discussion is a ussual when banik posts.

for Me, the principles of "OLD GOR" stand for truth, honor, integrity and feeling what it is you have deep down inside and want to express to others. whether it is being a Free Man or Woman, or a slave feeling the burn to serve as it swells from deep inside. (yes I know its the same thing Ubar said. Im just reinterating it). if a Free Man or Woman does not feel that within Them, then They should be as They free to be. It takes alot of spirit and desire of what ever kind be it on one's knees facing a Free offering service or to be that Free requesting or accepting it. for those that do not know what it is you want to be but instead, try and do both within Gor, this isnt the place for you. there are other places that you can go to and be both Free and slave/submissive alike. even both.

I know I didnt post much... but then when I saw this thread I had to respond. I just dont have the time to say anything else.
