Update
« on: June 13, 2006, 09:04:48 AM »
I have just gotten back from the doctor's office. I am not a happy camper. I got to do the blood sugar test this morning (EARLY morning.. at least for me... *wrygrin* I don't DO mornings until at LEAST 10am). They make you drink this stuff that kinda tastes like the orange drink from McDonalds only sweeter and ickier, then you wait an hour, and then they prick your finger and do the test. The nurse said that as long as it's below 140 we're good... well.. mine was 220. Not good. So, it's official. I have gestational diabetes. And for a person who LIVES off bread products, this is sooo not good news. I love my pastas!! I have a perscription to get myself the blood tester and everything, and I'm waiting for them to call me to make my appt to see the diabetes nurse who will tell me what I can and can't eat, how much I can eat, and how to use the dang tester. I was never really concerned with the how much to eat since in 6 months I've only gained about 10lbs, so my weight gain has been perfect. Apparently the biggy is going to be what I eat, altho the doc has put me on an 1800 calorie diet... yay....

I'm not happy about this for the obvious reasons... but also.. my birthday is coming up and Roy and I always go to Olive Garden for my birthday. I may not get to do that now. I'm also thinking about the foods we ate last year at the Gathering, and I'm not sure how much of THAT I'd be able to eat either.

I go back in 2 weeks, and if my b/s level has not dropped, even tho I changed my eating habits, then I get to do insulin shots. Now, I don't mind needles. I have tattoos, and I get bloodwork done every 3 months for my auto immune disease, but the idea of sticking MYSELF with a needle gives me the total willies. So I'm praying that just a change of eating habits will work. Problem is, change of eating habits also means change of living habits. I usually only eat 2 meals a day, but I can't do that anymore.. which means getting up earlier, and probably going to bed earlier too. So, I'm not entirely sure when, or if, I'll be able to be in Camp.  Needless to say, I'm a little depressed about the whole thing right now, and I can't even have a piece of chocolate to help my mood!

do as instructed sis. it is hopefully only a temporary issue.

no worries about the gathering... there is always an asortment of food to choose from. just no cookies or cake, brownies, high sugar drinks, or going to extremes on bread type stuff.

do what you are supposed to do and after the kid is born, if it ever announces you do naught love me... take away all sweets and such that you had to give up and after a few months of that ask them again just how much you have naught loved them.

hugs  its not as bad as you may think .. stick with veggies and if  you can get  some of the new soy products that are out tast like  hamburgers  and such  try those .. soy helps keep sugars lowered  I know  have been a diabetic for  10 yrs.. and usually  the diabetes  goes away  after the baby is born . but  still should be careful because its an indication  that  you  could develope it later on in life . there is bread out  called ezeikial  bread  check your  health food store  it is low glycemic  and high in protean  lil nutty flavor  out side of that  great bread  I love it  .

I also had gestational diabetes.  Thankfully, my blood sugar levels returned to normal the very day I gave birth.  Yeah, the special diet was a bitch, but I actually didn't much feel the insulin injections unless I accidentally stabbed a stretch mark!

*chuckles* yes 10 comes in am.. so does 8 I'm discovering... *LOL* I see the nutritionist tomorrow morning at 8:30am... ugh... however, I saw the diabetes nurse yesterday afternoon so I have started taking my b/s levels at least 3 times a day. I am encouraged... to a point. Last night, an hour after supper, I was below the limit I needed to be at... I have to be below 140 and I was at 131. So I was thrilled to say the least.. now yes, we had a chicken and rice frozen meal in a bag, so, I was eating somewhat properly. But this morning when I took it (supposed to take it as soon asI get up before I eat or drink anything), was not so good. I'm supposed to be below 95 and I was 103. The only thing I can think of is that I often take Tums during the night for heartburn and that maybe that is effecting my b/s, because my reading after lunch was 126, well below the 140 mark.

So you see my confusion.. it seems that during the day I'm ok... I'm just not right away in the morning. I'm hoping the nutritionist can cast some light on this tomorrow.  Oh, and I SO love being able to take the sample on my ARM instead of my finger!!! That is a wonderful invention and doesn't hurt nearly as much!

I'll let y'all know what the nutritionist has to say about this whole mess... cuz I'm beginning to think I'm not GD at all.

the reason  Your  sugar is up in the morning more than likely because  You are not active sleeping  eat  Your big meal at noon not at supper  that should help some  and  docs are discovering  taking  cinamon  pills can help in lowering sugars too. You might want to try  some  walmart has them cheap .

I had GD with my second pregnancy. Less than a month before he was born, had to go for an untra-sound to see if I was carrying twins, because I was absolutely huge. And, to check on baby, because I had gain a whopping 13 pounds. Since there was only one babe, they were very concerned because I couldn't get my b/s down and my weight up. Now, try to gain weight when you are eating foods to reduce blood sugar levels...that is an oximoron...lol.  I got the threat that if I did not gain weight and get my b/s level down, I would have to on the needle. Well, that scared the placenta outta me, because he was born 3 days later (and 3 wks early).  But rest assured, your levels will return to normal once babe is in your arms. A good suggestion would be instead of eating 3 meals a day.........eat 6 smaller meals throughout the day.  Do as much exercising as your doctor allows, especially walking.  Now, for me, I am a high risk now for type II diabetes, because of the family history of diabetes.....my father is type II...and though she was never tested, we suspect that gramma (dad's mom) was also.

Check with your nutritionist.  Sometimes, a special treat live Olive Garden may be allowed.  Just have to make up for it and watch your p's and q's for a few days following. All will be well....don't fret about it and stress the baby.

My morning b/s levels always sucked in the mornings, too.  During the day, I could regulate my b/s with food and activity, but I always woke up with high sugar in the morning.  I ended up having to take one shot of insulin at 9 p.m., and that would control my b/s through the night.

first off let Me say I am of Gor many moons ago and still drop round at times...

Hun,
Being of the medical profession and living with a adult onset diabetic:
recent research has shown, and We have tried and found to be true, the cause of early am high readings is not caused by only overdoing the night before. This can also be caused by your b/s level dropping too low at night while You sleep. B/S level dropping too low will cause the body to kick in and produce too much since you are inactive.
The best way to determine this is by checking the level at bedtime. if the level is below the desired level then a small snack will help prevent the "going too low n pumpin too high" syndrome.

hope I have not poked My nose where not wanted.....

*grin* thanks everyone!! I really appreciate the concern and the input. This morning my b/s was in the normal range so we're thinking the Tums was the culprit since I didn't take any last night. We think maybe I have a problem regulating refined sugars as compared to carbs. *shrugs* It's the theory my nutionist and I came up with, and I'll run it by my doc when I see her in 2 weeks.

My nutritionist is wonderful and arranged my eating schedule to MY living schedule, by not scheduling breakfast until between noon and 2pm, and then going from there, which means I take my final snack at midnight, because yes, she has me on multiple meals... I feel like I'm tidbitting myself! *lol* 8 crackers for an afternoon snack?!?! Anyway, so far things have been looking good... and the diet she has me on isn't that hard to follow... for example, tonight we had smoked grilled chickien, which is safe, california blend veggies which is all safe.. no starchy veggies, and then I was allowed 3 starches for supper.. so I was able to have a cup of liptons side noodles, which made for a complete meal and because I had my snack I wasn't as hungry as I normally am and so that all filled me up quite nicely. She's even helped me find where the restaraunts etc show their nutional info so that I can make informed choices without going overboard on the carbs... altho it's looking like Olive Garden is out, and a steak place a much better option.

In ohter news.. Roy tried to take his finger off today. he was mowing the back part of our lot, which doesn't get mowed regularily, and ran over a tree stump and bent the mower blades. So, he went and got new ones, and because he has this blade fetish and likes any kind of blade nice and sharp, he sharpened them and while he was putting them on the mower the wrench slipped and he sliced his left index finger pretty deep. Deep enough that we went to the doctor and he got 4 stitches put in it. So he's trying to do things while having this big gauze pad over his finger with a splint over that... *chuckling* At least it was his left.

Well now, let's see. I've been cleaning, sorting, cleaning, sorting, and oh yeah.. sleeping a bit too. Yep, we've started on the dreaded storage room. Roy moved a bunch of stuff downstairs the other day which, other than the Christmas boxes, I have sorted, filling at least one black garbage bag full of stuff my mother was positive I could't part with or throw away while I was packing 7 years ago to move down here. Now, you have to understand the shape of this room. Our house is technically a Cape Cod. That means that this room has a floor space that was large enough for our old King sized waterbed, but also on top of this has this jut that comes out of the room that leads to a window at the end. I think it's supposed to be a really long Dormer or something. Standing straight, you can walk down the MIDDLE of this area without cracking your head, but the ceiling slopes DRAMATICALLY from the 6 foot height in the middle, to 2 1/2 feet at the wall. Not adult condusive to say the least, but, probably a great play area for kids. ANYway, that's where most of the stuff had been stored since it was out of the way there. So, Roy has moved all of that stuff into the main room, where I'm now sorting while he scrapes the spackle off the ceiling in the dormer area. Oh joy oh happy day. *lol* I have filled yet another black garbage bag full of things my mom thought I needed to keep, and have almost filled a very large box full of stuff to go to Goodwill. I'm more than 1/3 done with the boxes upstairs because several of them are filled with books, and they're not getting unpacked until after the painting etc is done.

Which brings us to the next big thing, the painting. We have chosen the colours, we just need to go get the paint now that we've calculated how much paint we need. Now obviously, I will not be helping with this part.

So, I have been kept busy, other than thursday nights, when we go play poker at the casino boat. I am still alive, I am still thinking of everyone, I have been checking the boards daily, I've just been super busy since we only have a few weeks left before Roy goes back to the ship and we have to get all this done by then. Ack! Heck, we still need to find a low dresser and low bookshelves. I'm trying to find those ones that are about 3 feet high and about 6 feet long. I'm thinking flea markets and antique malls are going to be my best option at this point. My mom had a great one, but my brother and his wife got it since it was easier for them to get it TO their home.

Once we have the nursery done life should slow down a bit. I can hardly wait! Because then I'll have a life and I might actually be able to get into Camp! We still don't know about the Gathering since it's too soon for Roy to know when he's going back to the ship, so at the moment, we're planning on going until we hear otherwise.

loves you all!
Kiersten

oh.. and the  lawn mower broke down AGAIN... we are not happy campers today... especially Roy.
