Care and Cleaning of Leather Clothing

It has been noticed that some of our slaves were washing leather clothing as they would any other cloth or material. This would actually cause the leather to harden and crack and to become unwearable.

To clean leather clothing of any kind, a slave will gather several clean cloths, a basin of heated water, a small brush, and leather oils - much the same as s/he would when preparing to soap a saddle or a bosk harness.

The slave will then take the leather item in hand, wet a cloth with the hot water, squeeze until the cloth is almost completely dry, and then briskly scrub the garment. The brush may be lightly used if there is difficulty removing mud and grime from the natural grain of the leather. The most stubborn of stains should be removed with a bit of saddle soap. Next, the slave will rinse the surface of the leather with a clean cloth, turn the item inside out, and repeat the process. When the leather is clean but wet, the slave will use a dry cloth to wipe away the moisture. Pouring oils ON THE CLOTH, s/he will then rub the leather in a circular motion. Care must be taken to oil all seams, especially in regard to boots, where the sole is attached to the upper.

Finally, with another clean and dry cloth, the slave will wipe off the excess oil until the leather is no longer slippery and does not leave a residue on his/her fingers. The warmth of the water and the replenishing nature of the oils will bring the leather back to its original size and shape, making it supple for futher use.
